Many of today's young ten- nis superstars, like Bjorn Borg, Jimmy Connors and Raul Ramirez, share a com- mon athletic skill - quick- ness. If you've ever had the op- portunity to See Ramirez play doubles (he's the current WCT champ) you'll agree that his speed and reflexes are. phenomenal. He gets to shots that others write off as sure winners. Often his star- tled opponents see their drop shots turned into volley win- ners. Contrary to popular belief, quickness is not an innate, unlearnable skill. You can improve. Here's how: 1. Get stronger: It's impos- sible to be fleet afoot if you don't have the necessary muscles to move your body around. Strengthening small muscles in the legs will help improve lateral and vertical movement. Try jumping rope - or "fetter yet -- run up hills. It hurts a little -- but helps a lot. 2. Improve your flexibility: Muscles do 'not respond properly,if they are tight. You can make your muscles more elastic by doing some serious stretching exercises. Read a book on the subject. 3. Move like a tennis play- er: In the waiting position, spread your feet wide so you can push off better and move faster from side to side. Also, keep your knees flexed while bouncing rhythmically on the balls of your feet. The mes- sage will get from your head to your feet quicker if you stay off your heels. 4. Learn to anticipate: Don't get in the habit of standing around admiring your ' shots. Anticipate! Im- mediately prepare for the next shot by recovering your court position. Always expect the worst -- that your best shots will come back. Concentrate better on the ball. Watch the seams closely so you can predict the bounce. As you watch the ball off your opponent's racquet see if you can tell where it's going. Learn to distinguish between the different tech- niques that influence its di- rection . Now you know that quick- ness is more than just blazing speed. It's mental prepared- ness, anticipation, proper footwork technique, and flexibility as well. You don't have to be the "roadrunner" to be quick on the court. j, 30 Edge of Night 8, 10 The Doctors 11 What's the Good Word 13 The Canadians 6 3:00 Take Thirty 8 Rimstead 6 City Lights 10 General Hospital 11 Another World 13 3:30 Celebrity Cooks 8, 10 The Young, Restless 11 Pink Panther (cartoon) 6 4:00 Forest Rangers 8 Jeopardy 11 Flintstones 13 Gilligan's Island 6 Take Thirty 10 4:30 Comin' up Rosie 8, 10 Bewitched 11 Brady Bunch 13 The Monkees 6 5:00 Phil Silvers 8 Partridge Family 10 Swiss Fam.
