Q. Is there anything new
that can be done about
menstrual cramps? I have a
daughter who suffers for two
days every month. She has
been examined by a gyne-
cologist, but nothing helps
much.
A. The newest theory about
one of the causes of
menstrual cramps has to do
with the prostaglandins,
chemicals occurring in many
tissues, but recently found to
be important in obstetrics
and gynecology. Their con-
trol may have a lot to do
with better treatment of
menstrual cramps.

Dear Dorothy:
Whether I am in military or
civilian life, I always end up
in headquarters ... either as a
deputy, special assistant or
office clerk. I lack the satis-
faction of making the break-

politics. This involves politi-

have and don't even try to
cultivate. I guess my problem
is unusual.

Dear Mr. Anonymous:
Your problem is unusual —
so is your writing.
You are so consistently con-
trated that your personal-
ity no dilution, seen in
your very small writing.
You are trying so hard to be
perfect, that you are -
hemmed -in. You , find it al-
most impossible to spread
yourself into different direc-
tions, which, you'll have to
agree, is a necessity if you are
going to make connections.
You have a brilliant mind,
seen in the pointed m's and
n's, and your ability to con-
centrate so completely has
been a decided advantage in
pursuing your intellectual
status. You are so minutely
detailed, seen again in the
small writing and the i dots,
and you take things so seri-
ously, seen in your writing
pressure, that tension con-
sumes you.
While you are a very capa-
ble person, you are not too
sure of your abilities, seen in
the lbw t crossings. Since you
have never really been con-
vinced of your true worth, you
have never really known ex-
actly what you went to do in
life. Your extreme pride, seen
in the very tall t's, has tried to
pursue, for you, positions
which would give you some
return in order to fulfill some
of your basic needs for ac-
ceptance.
sceptance.
. While it is unlikely that you
would experience any real
satisfaction in a social or po-
litical picture, you have un-
usual , ability in specialized
fields, involving detail work.
Here you would experience
the fulfillment you are crav-
ing, and the recognition you
deserve.
Everyone has his capabili-
ties, and his limitations.
It is only when you can rec-
ognise your own that'you can
contribute your part to the
universal whole with corffi-
dence in yourself and faith in
others.

that the prostaglandins DAM
in the lining of the uterus are
responsible. It is known that
aspirin prevents their forma,
tion and most women have
had some relief for mild
cramps with aspirin. It is, of
course, not practical to take
very large doses of aspirin,
and might even be danger-
ous.
There are other drugs to
prevent the formation of
prostaglandins and these are
being tested experimentally.
The time should come when
we have a really effective
way of treating severe
menstrual cramps. In the
meanwhile, whenain is
incapacitating and interferes
with normal living, birth con-
trol pills and other hormones
may be the medication of
choice. Most doctors feel
birth -control pills are pri-
marily for contraception and
prefer prescribing them for
cramps only when the
cramps are severe, but they
have a place.

- Are you a summer back
Hopper?
It's an occupation that re-
quires no skill, no training, no
cost. You just need a little
time and lots of imagination
along with the ability to re-
lax.
So one of the easiest pas-
times is to find a comfortable,
grassy spot where you can be
all alone, still and quiet.
Then, lie flat on your back
and gaze up at the sky.
Chances are — if it's just the
right kind of warrn, sunny
- day — there will be a few
clouds drifting by.
Without even trying, if you
gaze upward long enough,
you'll begin to see patterns or
shapes in the clouds. One
may look like a fuzzy animal.
As you stare at it, that shape
may begin to shift and
change. And, before you
know it, a floppy dog may
turn into a map of Australia,
or perhaps a big ice cream
cone, or goodness knows
what.
Perhaps this sort of cloud
gazing is how the phrase
came about, "building
castles in the sky."
After awhile, however, you
may get tired of lying out in
the sun. How about some lazy
day doodling, then, just play-
ing with blobs of paint?
Ordinary colored tempora
can turn into a type .of cloud
watching or blob gazing. Just
plot a big dab of wet paint on-
to ordinary paper and spread
it out with a brush with no
plan or design in mind. Make
several blobs of differertt col-
ors.
Now, wait for these to dry,
then outline each splotch with
a felt pen. While waiting,
make some eyes, large and
small, out of rounds of white
paper and black felt pen
marks.
The last step is to turn the
paper about and gaze at these
shapes awhile until some-
thing comes to mind where an
eye or twomight Just fit in
fine. The accompanying illus-
tration began with just such
unplanned blobs.
As in cloud watching
(though with the addition of
eyes) these formations now
suggest such shapes to you as
a sea horse, alligator, fish or
dinosaur. Like in cloud
watching, two persons rarely
see the same thing, but it's
certainly fun When they do.
Perhaps this type of paint-
ing could be called "clouda-
bobs." Try it, and see how
pleasant it is for summer day
relaxing.

Q, My husband and I have a
fairly large dlning'anti living
room conbin tion and we
want `.a warm, colorful and
con*f ortable atmosphere ,
since we sPend most of our
time in this one room, The
walls are off-white and our
furniture is Spanish with a
crushed velvet :sofa and Ibve-
seat. One wall has large win-
dows with the draperies ex-
tending from one end of the
wall to the other.
The fireplace is wood
paneled with a wall plaque of
crossed swords belonging to
the English days. We also
have two conquistador
lamps. We just bought a
tapestry with the subject
matter a bull fight.
I think we goofed but is
there any way we can com-
bine these periods of time by
getting other things and still
achieve our goal or do you
suggest we get rid of the wall
plaque, theps and the
tapestry andsWt all over
again? —M.G.W. '
A. I don't think it is the pe-
riod you need to have con-
sistent in your accessories.
Rather, I feel it is more a
matter of quality and, of
course, the things you truly
like. If you have, bought
something for your home that
you do not like later, you have
little choice but to eliminate
' it. I would not buy more
things trying to make it fit be-
cause it never will if you don't
like it.
Accessories for the home
and wall decorations in par-
ticular are highly personal
and should represent things
you especially like. Simply by
liking a number of things,
they often have a .compatibil-
ity even if they represent
widely differing periods in
history. With_ the : well
plaques, the Spar> i lamps
and the tapestry, you may
have too much going on. Per-
haps a simplier tapestry or
plainer lamps would be better
choices. I would start with the
things you really like and
build on those.
`Grown-up' skin
needs pampering
Your skin's oiliness de-
creases as you become older,
so after 29 it is best to use
soap sparingly, followed by
application of cold cream, or
use a nonsoap cleanser.
If you have dry skin, avoid
harsh alkaline soap, exces-
sive washing and the use of
too -hot water to rinse, your
face.
