Excitement - fingernail -chew-
ing excitement that kept you on
the edge of your seat. That would
probably be the term to best
describe the entertainment that
Rod Serling brought to our tele-
vision sets in the 50s and 60s.
From the time he walked out of
the "Twilight Zone" shadows to
introduce the show, until the time
he disappeared into the darkness
at the end of the show, it was top-
flight entertainment. And though
it may have been unbelievable
fiction then, it often came true.
What a successful person Rod
Serling could be today, with the
fabulous interest show in the
occult and the mystic world of the
unbelievable. His "Night Gal-
lery" more than once sent many
of us to bed shaking from fear
and afraid to look behind doors.
But like everyone, Rod Serling
became a victim to time and ill-
ness. At 50, he died last week in
Rochester, New York, following
open heart surgery.
A genius of a man, he never
stopped at second-best. He criti-
cized, and had every reason to.
the film and television industry
for showing such little creativity
and courage, one thing he himself
could never be accused of. He
found fault with television com-
mercials, so many of which are
aimed at little minds.
Serling, a highly -respected
man in his field, was the first
writer to be named president of
the National Academy of Tele-
vision Arts and Sciences. He won
five Emmy awards for television
writing, as well as several other
awards for excellence. He has
also been an ardent boxer, was an
excellent commentator of shows
other than his own (Jacques
Cousteau particularly) and lately
had been teaching dramatic
writing at a New Yc'rk State uni-
versity. He drove himself to
perfection and eventually to a
sickbed. How we need his talent
today in an industry that has
become blah and lifeless.
Serling is survived by a wife
and two daughters.
