The Wingham Advance-Times, 1975-07-03, Page 14age 14 -The Wiaigharn Advance -Times, Thursday, July 3, 1 OPP Re-forms Golden Helmets Commissioner Harold Graham off the Ontario Provincip, Police recently announced the re- formation of the OPP Motorcycle Precision Riding Team "The Golden Helmets". The team will start its exhibition schedule immediately after labor day, 1975. -Tie Golden Helmets", originally formed and trained in 1963, is comprised of experienced highway patrol officers from various OPP detachments in southern Ontario. Each member is specially selected from volun- teers who, with teamthates, is subject to special training sessions to maintain the high degree of perfection necessary for the team's performance. Under the direction of assistant commissioner R. H. Devereux of the traffic division, "The Golden Helmets" have demonstrated their intricate maneuvers at numerous fairs and exhibitions in Ontario. In 1 7, Canada's centennial year, "The Golden Helmets" were honored by being chosen to represent Ontario at "Canada Week" in New York City, N.Y. A member of the team also partf- cipated in the opening day parade of "Expo '70" at Osaka, Japan. The motorcycles used in the precision rides are powerful 1,200 CC, 850 -pound Harley Davidsons. They are radio -equipped, have sirens, flashing red warning lights and first aid kits. The motorcycles play an important role on Ontai ao highways, par- ticularly in the south. Mobility is their biggest asset, bringing first aid and assistance through lines of waiting traffic to the scene of an accident. The 1975 "Golden Helmets" team is comprised of: Corp. A. R. A. Oliver of London; Const. J. E. Taffe of London; Const. G. E. Wood off :''urlington; Const. A. G. Parkin of Burling- ton; Const. G. G. Gristey of Waterdown; Const. D. C. Ryan of Cayuga; Const. D. F. Steele off St. Catharines; Const. J. K. Barrow of Downsview; Const. P. T. Thompson of Downsview ; Const. J. R. Bragg of Port Credit; Const. R. I. Robinson of Oak Ridges; Const. R. K. Carpenter of Guelph; Const. R. R. Ramsey of Kitchener; Const. T. Goertzen of Bracebridge; Const. T. F. Smith of Barrie. The Peace River District has never ceased to agitate for a direct rail outlet to the Pacific coast, and as early as the 1800's, Saskatchewan and Manitoba were pressing for a railroad to Hudson's Bay. They were presented with a gift from Audrey Johnston and Mi- chael Fraser presented a gift to Michael King. Bob Fraser read an address. A very good crowd was in attendance. Lake of the Woods near the Manitoba border, boasts 14,000 islands and 60,000 miles of shore- line, more than twice around the world.
