Country
of' "Welsh" but fun
There was nothing really
"Welsh" about the Welsh Coun-
try Fayre in Belgrave last Satur-
day, but for Reverend John Ro-
berts it was a pleasant reminder
of "the sort of thing we used to do
back home."
The "fayre" (yes, that's the
way they spell it "over there")
was sponsored by the Knox Unit-
ed
nited church and the minister, Mr.
Roberts,. is the reason for the
"Welsh" part of it. Mr. Roberts
and his wife came to Canada
eight years ago from Waffles: they
have been in Belgrave all that
time_
Welsh or not, the fair was a de-
light for all and a success for the
church group. It was well attend-
ed by both Belgoave residents
and by out-of-town people who
just cane to see what a "fayre"
was_
It was an event for all ages_
There were dart games, ring
tosses and bowling for the ad-
venturous yowg, stalls of band -
made aprons and "fancy goods"
for mothers and a table of home -
baked goods for all Tickets were
sold for an "elephant draw" wed
there was a "bran tub" for any-
one who wanted to "fish" for
priz
The "PoundStall" sold
groc-
eries, but rr t ,by the pound, and
the "Me 's . ' „ was not really
selling mein. I: was tended by the
men, however, who sold anything
and everything As one liberated
and daring male put IV "Every-
thing that no one else knows how
to sell, we sell."
The United Church Women
took advantage of the fair to ply
their, particular. "goods": sou-
venir plates to commemorate the
50th anniversary of the United
Church in Canada.
By far the most fun event, and
the one that drew most visitors,
was to teviWzirioe tank" set up
belyind the Belgrave arena. It
was there that adventurous
young amen like Scott Lougheed
and Wayne Cook wed on a
standhigh anyone to
knock them the tank of water
by hiss kro, a lever w'i u a ball.
"It's not bad up here really,"
Scott said at one time, and was
dunked almost immediately
The "dunkees" were
lucky in one sense: it was sure
one way to beat the heat. In fact,
when too many balks missed the
lever, the boys activated a hand
lever just to get the chance to
",off„_
And for the + u, + ect ending, all
the visitors ri :.' ed could re-
gale themselves at a delicious
meal served up by the Knox
UCW. It may be a cliche, but "a.,
good tune was had by all" is
about the only way to describe
the Welsh Country Fayre.

This is what Ontario is doing
to help them obtain it.
SHARON KELLER, three years old. had no doubts about
her enjoyment of the Welsh Country Fayre held at Belgrave
Saturday. She delightfully licked her fingers to get the last
bits of chocolate and announced in no uncertain terms: It's
moo.,
In recent months. the Ontario Government
has introduced. or expanded, a number of
measures aimed at putting home ownership
within reach of greater numbers of people.
That means doing two things -making
more housing available and helping you to
meet home ownership costs
Four Ontario Government programs are
directed nght at these objectiv
1. Home Ownership Made Eas.O.M.E.)
brings home ownership within reach of
many moderate -income earners. Houses
are built on serviced lots which are then
leased by Ontario Housing Corporation
to'new homeowners. who may buy the
land after five years. This combination
makes possible lower -than -normal down
payments and carrying costs
2. Ontario Home Renewal Program (OHRP)
offers grants and loans for home improve-
ments through local municipalities to low
and moderate income homeowners This
plan works to rehabilitate sub -standard
dwellings — especially those with faulty
structural and sanitary conditions— and
to upgrade plumbing,- heating and .
electrical systems.
3. Ontario Housing Action Program (DHAP)
helps municipalities and developers to..
increase the supply of serviced land. thus
lowering the cost of home ownership and
rental accommodations. It also en-
courages the building industry to more
closely match the housing mix to the
purchasing power of the majority of the
population.
4. Ontario Home Buyers Grant provides a
S1.500 grant in three instalments to any
Ontario resident who is 18 or older and
buying a first home. There are no pace
or income restrictions but the home must
be the buyer's principal residence and
acquired at fair market -value. The pur-
chase must be completed by December
31. 1975 and the buyer must be living in
the home by June 30, 1976.
