Anyway .. . . , . It's the metric system that needs defending now. I like to state at this point that there is not now or ever will be a law com- pelling 'B. Smiley to 'change to Celsius or adapt the metric system. He -simply is left be ' d and with an outlook on life e his, it would be no, great loss: A hot day of 35 degrees C is just as sweltering as 95 degrees F and water freezes both at 0 degrees C and 32 degrees F. So why should we not continue to start a conver- sation about the heat or the cold? Idioms like the ones mentioned in his article do not add a thing to the Canadian heritage nor de they contribute to our future. To use them as arguments against the inevitable introduction to the metric system is simply stupid. To rebattle with regards to his re- marks about, quote, "dull fac- simile of all those other dull nations", I would like to take him to Europe, Asia or Africa and teach him manners. The statement made by B.S. "metric maniacs insist that metric is more accurate" is just what the initials indicate. The following are some facts about the Systeme International d'Unites or SI for short. ft not only has scientific precision, SI is a decimal system based on the number 10 and therefore easily understood and manipulated. It will greatly reduce the time and efforts currently spent in class- rooms, memorizing the intrica- cies of the Imperial Measuring System. The SI system will enable the manufacturers to in- novate new ideas, cut production costs and reduce tooling expendi- tures because it brings obvious economic advantages in its simple structure such as world- wide compatability, access to de- veloped standards, rationaliza- tion of sizes (example: tooth- paste—the Imperial System had 28 sizes; Sr units -4 (four) types and products as well as direct relations to scientific approaches and methods. Export markets are more easily accessible thus raising the GNP output and in turn benefit all Canadians. Fred Moser 510 Main Street West Listowel, Ontario. I guess we must have .been really poor at -o r house because we often used dour knobs—thee whiteporcelain ones especially. I seem to remember that one year we had nothing better to put in the nest but a smooth white stone, and if the hens" took any note of - the difference they never let on. But whatever its chemistry, the original -nest -egg was essentially an empty sham, And in spite of the saintliness of the wonderful women who were then in charge of the nation's hens, the basic idea of the nest -egg was to lie to the hen. Mother put the dummy egg where she wanted a hen to lay a real one. The dummy egg was not only a snare and a delu- sion but it was also calculated to shame a hen into laying. It was supposed to say something like this to her: "See! Everybody else is doing it! Go thou and do like- wise!" Now I have grave doubts about whether or not the hen was fooled by this deception and thereby coaxed into pooping out that first henfruit any sooner, but that dummy egg at least insured that when the hen did begin to lay, she would put her egg in the same nest. But whatever its accomplish- ments, the original nest -egg was essentially a lie. Why then has the word "nest -egg" now come to mean something quite worthy br noble?' Having "a nest -egg tucked away somewhere" is indeed certain proof of integrity and .good citizenship. Who was that intellectual who first took "nest -egg" out of the henhouse and worked it into one of the most common idioms of our 1pnguage? Seems to me he was probably just another one of these learned people who talk so wisely about farming though theY wouldn't know a cockerel from a capon, or which end of a cow gets up first. Dear Sir, - In the Crossroads section of The Advance Times paper this week Bill Smiley's column "It's Metric Madness" expresses exactly my busband's and my . feelings. Why should we have this metric and celsius business thrust upon us without even being asked? It is going to cost thous- ands of dollars to change ma- chines, cash registers and much more such equipment: It is fool'- ish, (putting it mildly) and Bill Smiley has said it all much better than we can, but we too are 100 per cent' against metric and cel- sius. We will not know true measure- ment, or if we are getting what we are paying for! We have lived with degrees Fah. and lbs. for years—why cannot small minori- ties learn our systems instead of us having to learn theirs. Bill Smiley said to write our Editor if we agreed with him and we most certainly do! Two Canadians Dorothy M. Townsend Jack Townsend P.S. To further my wife's statement, I don't think that the average person visualizes how far we have to go on the Metric System. H. GORDON GREEN I wonder why antique collect- ors never seem to collect nest - eggs. I am not referring to a secret savings account, of course, or a sock full of thousand dollar bills hid under the mattress, but of the honest -to -goodness henhouse kind of nest -egg. If you're as old as I am, you'll remember it very well. It was the dummy egg Mother used to place in every nest box in the spring of the year, and particularly in a miserable spring such as this one when the hens were in no mood to swing into production. Some of these dummy eggs were of china and quite beautiful. Others were made of a plain, osoroad BATS ARE BENEFICIAL Bats feed on mosquitoes and other night -flying insects, many of which are annoying and des- tructive pests. For this reason, it is best not to destroy bats, .but to keep them out of buildings. II- lumination of attic areas with spot lights or safety lamps during June, July and August will dis- courage bats from rooting there. They may also be repelled by naphthalene or paradichloro- benzene (moth flakes or crys- tals) . Three to five pounds of moth crystals sprinkled in an average -size attic during yrm weather should drive bats out. SLUGS MaN SERI , WOW Moet off 's!foulc' coign** slugs came attacks cry.
