mnounced regulations under the
Hazardous Products Act setting
new minimum standards for the
flammability of carpets and rugs.
Effective January 1, 1976, all
carpets and rug imported, ad-

must meet these new require-
ments, which will" result in in-
creased protection for consumers
against accidental ignition of
floor coverings.
-These regulations -are the re-
sult of Ongoing programs involv-
ing textile flammability in the
Department of Consumer and
Corporate Affairs, which began
in 1971 with the establishment of
minimum flammability require-
ments for all textile fibre pro-
ducts. This new, more severe
standard for carpets has been de-
veloped in recognition of the fire
spread potential of carpets used,

floor areas in dwellings.
