"We may hope, but we'll never see the likes of this again. They were the words of .Frank Sinatra and he was talking about the flawless dancing of • Eleanor Powell and Fred Astaire as, they cavorted in their way through one of the early MGM musicals, one of several featured in the movie, "That's Entertaiipment!" which played in area theatres last week. Indeed, we will never see the likes of them again! Dancers like Powell and Astaire, who could dance better than most of us walk; funnynu n like Donald O'Connor.; entertainers lice Gene Kelly, Mickey Rooney. Acid what can you say that hasn't already been said- about Judy Garland? Watching the grew motnents from musicals like'"American in Paris", "The Wizard of Oz", "Showboat" ":Sin' ''ng ' . u . the • Rain'' and • so more, : one couldn't help but sing along and feel some of the ' joy .that was being transmitted on the screen.. But a wave of nostalgia. swept over many of us, who remember- ed the good old days when 'you went into a theatre to see stars perform in gorgeous costumes and give all they had to make the screen come alive with real. entertainment..A•far cry from to-- day's o-day's bed -hopping escapades with the 'stars' (?) only doin' what comes natur'lly! The musicals of Metro -Gold- wyn -Mayer studios in Hollywood, began in the 20s with the talkies. Many dramatic stars were pushed intosinging and dancing roles they couldn't handle be- cause the public • cried for musicals. True, there wasn't Much, of a plot to many of them but the spectacular sets, gor- geous costumes and fabulous talent of many of the stars more than made up for that. Sets laden with beautiful girls and sky-high birthday cakes, when stars like Dennis Morgan, George Murphy and other crooners were in their heyday, were something out of this world. And :of'course, there were the gorgeous water ballets of ' Esther Williams who went under in a blaze of glory and emerged'from the water, always smiling, surrounded by a magical fantasyland that is limited to most people's dreams. What memories these stars brought back to" us old-timers! Seemed to me ° the , rnovi8 always kept returning to the stars of the show •- Judy Garland, Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly. 'Entertainers of their calibre will certainly not be seen, ever again. Judy, of course, a talent that all, too soon was lost, will always be an important part of Hollywood memories. Ironically, this year's Academy Award show featured the other two - gentlemen who remain as ageless as Mickey Mouse. The two worked together in a movie only once and so it was fitting that when the Academy chose to honor Fred Astaire, the man chosen to do the honors was Gene Kelly. What a pair! And what a privilege to see them work together in "That's Entertain- ment"! ntertain-ment"! The musicals featured in this movie were, of course, only from the MGM studios. How many more great ones came from the other major studios in Holly- wood! How many great musicals do you see now? Name three you have seen within the last year and they'll either be years old or on television. Last year's only big musical, "Mame", in which Lucille Ball did such a marvell- ous job and should .have, rived ;recognition, •didn't even get a mention in , the Academy Award• n0010400, Sad indeed, If there is anythitig'this worldne , it more :Iaughter, more song, more joy like that spread throughout the world by the big musicals. For two magical hours, we were taken back to those grand days when going to the movies was a fun experience. Where are the stars now? Eleanor . Powell is. retired. Gene Kelly is directing. Fred As Rare, is trying -dramatic.-stuff - (received-. an Oscar nomination' orhis werk in "Towering Inferno" last year). Debbie Reynolds is a big hit in a Broadway musical as is Jane Powell. Esther .Williams .is re- tired, happily married . to a co- star, Fernando Lamas, a. and:hav- jgg 1tof .9 bx le. es which doctors are blaming on the chlorine in the water during those beautiful water ballets. Joan CrdWford is running her late hus- band's business as head of the Pepsi-Cola Company. Mickey Rooney is getting married -- and married - and married. Frank Sinatra is making a big come- back after the shortest retire- ment on record. Howard Keel is performing concerts in theatres and night clubs. Ginger Rogers is doing summer stock. Ann Miller has written a book. And that great, great funnyman, - Donald O'Connor, is still "Makin' 'Em Laugh" in nightclubs, television guest appearances and theatrical appearances.
