The Howick Grapevine MORRISON McCALL SPELLING TEST On Wednesday, May 7,1975, the second Morrison McCall spelling test was, dictated to th'e grade three to grade eight students. The purpose of this test was to • determine the spelling level of the students, and compare their marks to those received pre- viously in January. ' —Susan Edgar FRENCH SPEECHES On Thursday, May 8, . for the first time Howick Central School held it French Speaking Contest. Out of 20 contestants, who had worked hard on the writing, pro- nunciation and memorization of their speech, four winners were chosen. ., Barbara Kaufman. placed first with 86 per cent, Nancy Fisher was second with 84 per cent, Edna Loughran third with 82 per cent and Susan Edgar was fourth with 80.6 per cent. We thank everyone who helped in making the contest possible and a success. All the Grade 8 students wish to thank Mr. Fisher for organizing this contest. VINCENT Mr. Vincent, who has been in our school before speaking on the topic of South America, will be here on May 9th, 1975, giving a presentation on Canada. They had the sale to help Room 13 make their grfota for the trip to Ottawa. —Stephen Douglas 0-0-0 YEARBOOK The end of the school year at Howick Central is nearing;► and with it domes, along with' many other activities, the publishing of the yearbook. The 'many interesting topics have been divided for edition between the grade eight classes. We hope to publish a complete and satisfying yearbook. • —Nancy Fisher CANADIAN FITNESS AWARDS. The Canadian Fitness Awards are over for one more year and again they have been a success with 408 participants. Out of these 408 students ranging from grade 3 to 8, 21 have been awarded the award of excellence. They were from room 10, Heather Brent, Rhea Behrns, Nancy Versteeg, David Burns, Marg Borg, Trent Forter and Andy Demerling; from Room 9, Barb Noble and Karen Kaufman; from Room 19, Doreen Forter and Regan Dett- man; from. Room 14, Laurie Brears; Room 16 had Donna Powell, Alan Sturgeon and, Wayne Lockie; Room 13, Yolanda De Bruin, Edna Loughran; and Room 15 who had three, Laurel Dane, Shirley Versteeg and Roger Sturgean. I feel these students should be congratulated yr the excellent effort, especially Room 10 who had 7 excellent winners. There were six events in this year's program. The standing broad, the 300 yard. dash, the 50 yard dash, the flexed arm hang, speed sit-ups and the shuttle run. Forty students obtained a gold badge, 120 a silver badge, 159 a bronze badge, and 65 were participation badges. Mr. Livermore would like to extend a special thanks to Gwen Dickson who was a great asset in• 'tithing and recording the marks.
