Show Biz
As usual, the big -mouths who -
have the privilege of appearing in
the first half of an unrehearsed
special, blabbed their heads off
television special; blabbed their
heads off and the eleople we really
wanted to see and hear were
limited to 30 or 60 seconds!
ACTRA awards shiow live from
the gorgeous Hyatt Regency
Hotel in Toronto, glittering with
chandeliers and stars. The Actra
awards are given by the. Associa-
tion of Canadian Radio+and Tele -
by Venni Lee
moments of the show.
Among the awards which were
presented were those for writing
which went to Mordecai Richter
and Lionel Chetwynd for the
feature film, "The Apprentice-
ship of Duddy Kravitz" (They
were nominated for a Hollywood
Oscar but lost.); W. O. Mitchell
for radio's "Back to Beulah";
William Whitehead and Timothy
Findley for an episode of "The
National Dream"; Leo Dufault
for his radio documentary, '1.'wo
vislarsri Ayt1 t ' by `iCa'osthade-tti".-' Oranges and w Handful-'afiNUts".
Canadians, which is good, con-
sidering the fact that if our films
receive recognition in other
countries, they. seldom win
awards.
The show moved more quickly
than last year's which isn't say-
ing much as 1 was bored to tears
last year. But, as in other award
shows, they leave the best until
last, the biggest awards and the
biggest stars and invariably; they
run out of time. Pierre 'Berton
was the first to get carried away
with his talk and other presenters
and recipients followed suit with
dragged -out speeches and funny
(?) stories.
Some terrific breaks in the
award -giving were presented by
pert and perty Diane Stapley
(last year's variety winner),
Catherine McKinnon, Dianne
Brooks, Gordon Pinsent and John
Allan Cameron, who performed
numbers. written by Canadians,
many of the songs never heard
before. Pinsent, of course, wrote
his own song, a lovely haunting
folk song about the "Children of
the 30s". That lad is very talented
and provided many of the bright

• Don Chevrier was 'snit red
best sportscaster and 'was pr''-
sented by last year's winner,
Danny Gallivan. Best. vpriety
performers were the Irish Rov-
ers. .
Public Affairs awards went to
two women as they did last year.
Barbara F`rum made it two con-
secutive years as she won for her
radio show, "As it Happens".
And Helen Hutchison, who hosts._.
"Canada„ AM", edged out Adri-
enne Clarkson this year.
The Gordon Sinclair Award, for
Outspoken opinions and integrity
in broadcasting went to Van-
couver's Jack Webster who
comes a close second to Sinclair
when it comes to being mouthy.
The Andrew Allan Award for
best acting on radio, went to Ron
*Hermann for his role in "Oth-
ello'; and the John Drainie
Award, the winner chosen by past
recipients, went to Bob Weaver.
Three new categories this year
were best acting in a feature film
which went to Stuart Gillard for
"Why 'Rock the Boat?"; best
news broadcaster, an honor won
by Michael MacLear; and the
best program of the year, an
important award taken by Harry
Rasky's "Next Year in Jerusa-
lem" on CBC Television. He won
an award last year for his special
on playwright Tennessee Wil-
liams.
Probably the most interesting
battle was that for the Earle Grey
Award for the best acting per-
formance in TV or a non -feature
film, won last year by Jackie
Burroughs for her work in
"Vicky". It was a three-way
battle among Michael Kane of
"The Collaborators", William
Hutt of "The National Dream"
and Patrick Watson for his por-
trayal. of Leonardo de Vinci. It
went to Hutt, one of Canada's
finest actors, for his work in por-
traying Sir John A. MacDonald
and making him come alive for
all of us. An award well deserved
and accepted by Hutt who looked
like he needed some rest. Heavily
involved with his schedule at the
Stratford Festival right now, he
had probably commuted to
Toronto for the ceremonies and
would have to be on deck in Strat-
ford for early rehearsals. What-
ever the reason for his sickly
appearance, winning the award
was probably worth it. The role of
Sir John A. must have left the
man emotionally and physically
drained and I doubt if anyone
would argue with the judges.
if you were wondering why our
French Canadian stars did not
show up as winners this year, it is
because they were awqrding
their own honors in a separate
teremony.
