The Wingham Advance-Times, 1975-03-20, Page 28Adv* T%e3, Thursday, March 50, I<9 WHAT WAS ONCE A DULL FAMILY ROOM has been changed with just a single wall of paneling and some helpful "how to" installation tips. Adding warmth that was previously lacking, a nautical flavor was created with new furniture and the planked -and -pegged look of the new prefinished paneling. Family room 'ship shape' with plywood wall paneling A beautifully decorated home doesn't just happen; it is the pro- duct of careful planning, This adage was especially true for a Vancouver, Wash., couple settling into their newly pur- chased home with unpacked "leftovers" and the drab, lifeless walls left by the builder. Careful planning was needed to turn the drab into the delightful, weaving a personal mosaic to fit the family's lifestyle. Reformation begins The first room on the agenda of reformation was the family room with its plain plaster walls and a red -brick fireplace. Step one was a thorough search through local home improvement centers for decorating ideas and a wallcovering that would 'cover the textured wallboard. - There they tound the choices virtually endless with an un- limited selection of wall paint colors, wallpapers, and a myriad of prefmished wall panelings, from natural woods to man-made duplications. Paneling choice made The final choice was paneling with the look of old planking and simulated nailheads A new "how to" booklet aided the do-it-yourself couple in the installation of the four -by eight - foot panels. Existing base moldings were removed, and panels first set side by side to achieve a harmonious balance of color and grain con- figuration. Mrs. Homemaker assisted her handyman •husband, too. She gathered the required tools for 9. A REAL BUY.... (It may be 24 inches in some homes.) This step provided a plus in the installation of the new paneling with random v -grooves also lo- cated on 16 -inch centers. Tips Prove Helpful Professional tips from the "how to" booklet were also help- ful. They clued the do-it-your- selfer to paint strips on the wall where the plywood panel joints would come. Black spray paint speeded the process and mini- mized the visibility of the white gypsum board showing through panel gaps. Using a straight edge and a soft lead pencil to provide a clear, even line, wall dimensions were marked on the reverse side of the panel. And cutting was made eas- ier with a borrowed sabre saw and sawhorses.' By outlining the outlet box with chalk, the handyman was able to transfer its location and image to the back of the panel without too much difficulty. He then drilled 3/4 -inch holes in the corners of the transferred outline to make the cutout. Panel by panel the steps were followed and adhesive was used to fasten the new prefinished ply- wood directly to the plaster.' Finishing Touches The finishing touches came with the replacement of base moldings,, and addition of new furniture and accessories. A single wall of paneling changed this plain looking family room into a nautical showcase. The softwoodAo s of the panel- ing gavecIT a armth that was previously lacking. This do-it-yourself couple now agree the paneling wasn't that hard to install. Pleased with the results they are planning to reform a drab dining room wall. CHILD'S BATH If your home has a bath for the children or even if you want to liven up the family bath for the kids, try putting decals of animals, cartoons or funny stick figures or storybook characters on the ceramic tiles, • Panels help reduce. costs of remodeling The high cost of living space forced many homeowners to forego a new home. Now, rising prices of materials and labor could put even remodeling out of their reach. Is there a way to remodel at reasonable cost? A leading paneling manufacturer says tics. Use economical materials, and if possible, do the work yourself. While some remodeling jobs require professional skills and safety measures, others do not. One reason for increased use of wall paneling is the ease with which it can be installed by a competent do-it-yourselfer fol- lowing manufacturer's direc- tions. Use of vinyl veneer panels, prefinished with woodgrain pat- terns, simplifies the job. The prefinishing process, in which patterns are reverse -print- ed on the underside of vinyl veneer film that is laminated to particleboard, has another bene- fit. It keeps production — and re- tail — costs low. A selection of de- signs is available. The panels are extremely sturdy, and can be damp -wiped clean. Details of panel installation may vary a bit with each mantl- facturer, but, in general, three steps are involved: i. Preparing the wall. This de- pends on will construction. Brick, veneer, masonry and con- crete require furring strips backed by polyethylene sheath- ing. Rough spots on dry lath or plaster should be sanded smooth. Stud walls with spaces larger than 16 inches on center need horizontal backing and backing behind panel edges. All walls must be "true". 2. Acclimating panels to room conditions. This is done by stand- ing the panels horizontally around the room and letting air circulate around them for 48 hours before installation. 3. Allowing for natural expan- sion after installation. The rule of thumb is to butt panels lightly to- gether, to leave a quarter -inch between panels and floor, and an eighth -inch between panels and ceiling. Fasten panels with the special adhesive or nails recom- mended by the manufacturer or building materials dealer. YOU CAN STILL AFFORD WALL BEAUTY—if you choose the right paneling. These vinyl veneer panels, prefinished in G,a classic woodgrain pattern, give a luxury look at reasonable cost. Drop ceiling and give room a lift .. Dropping the ceiling. That -'s what many smart decorators are doing to revitalize a room.' The ceiling is. notas in- conspicuous as one might think. A poor -looking ceiling will stick out like a sore thumb, no matter how great the rest of the room is put together. Dropping the ceiling with ac- oustical tiles will give it an even, clean surface that will need little or no care. It can also help to soundproof the room. And it's an inexpensive method for covering cracked, rough or stained ceil- ings yourself ! The standard method for in- stallation on rough, 'uneven ceil- ings involves nailing up wood fur- ring strips first (strips of wood about 11/2" wide by 3/4" thick) , then stapling the tiles to these. Some remodelers use a new type of metal furring. Whatever the method, installa- tion is fairly easy, and there is a wide variety of fashionable tiles on the market to fit into any room decor.
