Flims will tell
freedom's story
WASHINGTON, D. C. - To
commemorate the 200th anni-
versary of the struggle for
American independence, the
National Park Service has
created one of the most ex-
tensive programs in its his-
tory.
One of its major efforts is
the making of two general
films, one telling the story" of
the common American of the
war period, the other relating
the cultural diversity of the
land that was to become the
United States.
A frail, Obviously ill Charlie
Chaplin appeared before the
Queen of Englandlast week to re-
ceive her highest honor, a knight-
hood, Making hien Sir Charles
and adding yet another.character
to his long list of roles. Many of
his honors long overdue, this one
• was bestowed upon him at the
age of 8,5 after a bout with illness.
Charlie Chaplin was merely a
comedian, a performer who
came to Hollywood from England
in the early 1900s. He worked for
the Mack Sennett studios, from
which emanated some of the fun-
niest material to come out of
Tinseltown in those days.
But it wasn't really until he
planted a derby ori his head,
crawled into baggy pants, pasted
a moustache on his face and
picked up his cane, that he be-
came a star. He was the little
tramp, in every sense of the
word. His walk, his look, his garb
became his trademark and made
him famous and he provided the
world with some of the funniest
moments to ever be put on a
screen. -The. favorite scene of
many of his fans, and shown time
and time again, is the one in
which he cooks one.4L.his boots
and eats it. Truly a legendary
scenario which will always be a
most important part of Holly
wood's history.
At the height of his fame,
Chaplin was a movie star a in
just about any other place-
could
lace'could find him: comics, story
books, coloring and cutout books.
But he never really shook the
`Little Tramp' image.
Chaplin's life as a child was
hard, perhaps one reason he tried
to hide behind a mask of comedy.
And his adult life was not without
trouble either. His first marri-
age, to an actress, broke up
within two years. In the early 50s,
be was forced to leave The United
States, accused of Comma* af-
filiations. He went to We in
Europe and later admitted a feet-
ing of bitterness at the way
America had treated from. Em'
ally, though, Hollywood rea»
.nixed the great little man's talent
and contribution to the movie
world and awarded hint an Oscar
in 1972, He flew to ldolbywaod to
accept the award.
Sir Charles is happily maid.
now, to Oona O'Neill, and tk#+ey
have eight children, some of
them already making names for
themselves in the world of the
performing arts.
As 1 watched Sir Charles
accept this latest honor, I felt a
lot older. Somehow he was a man
who would never grow old, like
Maurice Chevalier he was the Be-
ing fountain of youth, always the
Little Tramp who would stay the
same. But time has taken its toll
and though the Little Tramp will
always be ageless, Chaplin does
not have this privilege.
The knighthood is a nice thing
to happen to such a great little
man. But will he ever be Sir
Charles? I doubt it. Too many
people know and love him as just
plain Charlie or as the ageless
Little Tram i.
