CHRISTOPHER PLUMMER
AS LEACOCK
Canada's legendary humorist, Stephen Leacock, is portrayed
by the internationally -renowned Canadian actor Christopher
Plummer, in a one-hour special, Travels Through Life With Lea-
cock, to be seen on the CBC television network on 'Wednesday,
March 19, at 8:30 p.m. The special, based on Leacock's writ-
ings and exemplifying his philosophy of life, was filmed partly
on location at Brewery Bqr,-h Orillia, Ont., where the great
humorist lived and, at McGilbUniversity in Montreal, where he
lectured. The special is written, produced and directed by
award -winner Harry Rasky (The Wit and World of G. Bernard
Shaw; Tennessee Williams' South).

The ever involved and involv-
ing comic antics of Lucy were the
topic of an hour-long special for
Lucille Ball, shown last week on
the Global television network
here ih Canada and on American
stations on CBS. She played the
role of a Los Angeles career gal
who flies to Las Vegas to catch
Dean Martin's opening. She has
made a reservation for eight but
never had any intention of taking
eight and shows up alone to
occupy a table -for -eight. Natural-
ly, the show is sold out and they
won't let one person occupy a
large table alone so she is out one
reservation. Later, when she
learns Dean is going to present a
show for the total staff following
his regular performance, she
tells all kinds of fibs and puts
people through terrible anguish
to hold down a job at the hotel so
she can earn a place in his staff
audience.
Lucy never changes. She is the
same funny girl she always was
and at an age where most people
are sitting with their feet up and
thinking about retirement, she is
'Tis

as busy as ever and her comdey,
though a bit too slapstick at
times, is still amusing, maybe to
a selective audience but at least
to a lot of people.
Her guest star, of course, was
Dean Martin, a performer who
never did learn how to act, was a
comedian only when he had Jerry
Lewis to back him, and is a singer
only because he is Italian. He had
his own television series for so
long that I, for one, became sick
of seeing him and hearing his
off-color jokes. But he still seems
to be able to pack 'em in the clubs
throughout the U.S. so, someone
must like him.
Question : Do two big stars
make a great television show? In
my opinion, N. Unless both
happen to be the tops in entertain-
ment - talent with t? capital T.
Some funny moments were pro-
vided by Lucy but basically, it
looked like a little game she was
playing in her spare time to keep
from getting bored. A simple
variety show might have been a
better vehicle for her talents.
The show was produced by her

04-0A haunting melodic song about
a very special relationship
between two people has won a
Grammy award as the Record of
The Year at annual presentations
of the recording industry's top
awards held in New York. Olivia
Newton John's recording of "I
Honestly Love You" took honors
and the singer was named best
female pop vocalist of 1974. She
won last year in the country and
western division.
Little Stevie Wonder, who is
becoming a legend in the record-
ing industry, took four awards,
among them the best male pop
vocalist. Marvin Hamlisch must
soon need a new mantel over his
fireplace. He walked away with
so many Oscars last year for his
w
work on music from "The Way
We Were" and "The Sting" that
we got a little sick of seeing him.
Now he repeats his success in the
Grammy race. "The Way We
Were" was the best song_ of the
year and his version of the theme
song from "The Sting", "The
Entertainer", was the best pop
instrumental.
Wonder also won in the male
rhythm and blues category and,
for the eighth consecutive year,
Aretha Franklin was named the
best female rhythm and blues
performer. Country and western
awards went to our own Anne
Murray and to Ronnie Milsat for
his "Please Don't Tell Me How
the Story Ends". Best country
song was "A Very Special Love
Song". Elvis Presley, of all
people, was named winner of the
best inspirational song with his
recording of ,"How Great Thou
Art".
Jazz awards were claimed by
Woody Herman's big band
sound; Canada's Oscar Peterson
as best group and the late Charlie
Parker, single.
