and George Millar. Middle left and right are Will Millar and
Wilcil McDowell. Bottom is Joe Millar, sunk to the floor from the

Chante to test
driving skills
All Canadians will have an op-
portunity to test their driving
skills on Sunday, March 2,.when
the Canadian Broadcasting Cor-
poration presents a one-hour pro-
gram called the "Canadian
Drivers' Test".
Local listings should be
checked for the time of the
nationwide telecast, which is
being produced and directed by
Bill Bolt and hosted by Allan
Miller,
Multiple choice questions on
correct driving procedures will
be submitted to both the viewing
public and a studio audience of
200. The studio audience response
will be compared against Iwo
high -mileage professional driv-
ers, one from Edmonton and one
from Moncton, N.B., and a uni-
versity -graduate from Toronto.
1 turned on - and tuned in --
fully expecting to be turnedoff! It
was "The Entertainers" on CBC
Radio and yet another version of
the life of Marilyn Monroe. Ho
Hum. Will they never end?
But this was no ho hum show.
Toronto composer Cliff Jones did
a great deal of research 'on this
and presented some very moving
moments in two hours of music -
showing not so much Marilyn
Monroe the star as 'Norma Jean
Baker, the person. The man is
really great!
We have read the story so
many times but most of the books
and stories capitalized on her
sensational love affairs, her
temper tantrums, her continuous
late arrivals on sets, her
imagined illnesses, her never-
ending pill -popping. Certainly,
Jones did not ignore some of
these but he delved into her back-
ground to give us reasons, to give
us answers.
The two-hour show was con-
tinuous music - from the first
"Norma Jean, where's your
Mama? Who's Your Papa?'', to
the final song where she picks, up
the phone to make that last
mysterious call, only to be told
"He can't talk now; he'll call you
later" and we hear her tearfully
mumble "I took too many . - . I . .
tk... too ... many..."
' 'Her life was filled with losses,
from the first traumatic experi-
ence when a neighbor shot her
little dog Tippy, to the one joy she
wanted but was always denied
her - motherhood. The insecuri-
ty she felt was unbelievable. She
was shuffled from one home to
another all during her childhood,
rushed into a teenage marriage
with Jim Daugherty and when
her first real love came 'along,
she was too afraid to reach out
and accept or give love. Too late,
when Johnny Hyde died, she
learned he had meant a great
by Void Lee
dejl to her. His voice came baelg "
to haunt her, "'Whydidn't you tdI ...
me you laved me?" and
answer, "I didn't know that I
did." The story of her life
her realizatifint elitne too late.
Jones wrote a lovely Melodist
love song called "Hip Joe" to
introduce the ,love story betwe. z
Marilyn and Joe DiMaggio, again
a much too brief happineas fOr
her. Playwright Arthur Met*
.,
said to be the happ eat ef her
arriages, was a stabdiring b - -
fl -; ce in her life for awhile beat
not : enough.
Beverly D'Angelo, in her OM
solo role, was exceptionally good
as Marilyn, and has a lovely .
voice. She displayed very wellthe ' '
two women, the real Norma Jean
and the phony sex symbol that
Hollywood made of her. Other
solo parts, as well as the chorus
voices, were sung by Cal and -
Rory Dodd, Peter and Barbara
Law, -Rudy Webb, David George' '•
and Cathy Young.
Jones' first big successful
mucial "Kronborg: 1582", based
on Shakespeare's Hamlet", will'
begin a tour in May and open on. •
Broadway in the fall. Mum as I
hate to admit it, "Hey Marilyn"
would make a great stage play
and has much_ promising music.
Secretly, I suppose, I hoped his
play would not succeed because T
feel Marilyn was used and abused
enough in life without every sad
detail of her existence being
rehashed after her death. But
Jones bas a winner here and it
could perhaps turn into a stage
play that Marilyn herself would
be proud to see. Perhaps a new .F„
story, -sympathetically and ten-
derly told about a girl trying .to
find answers to life, would move
to oblivion all the trash that has
been written for sensationalism
and succeeds only in hurting the
living and the memory of the
dead.
