The resulting special is being seen on that network in the I States this 'week and was seen last Thursday evening on the C net, a}'lt°,bpre opting- Carol B nett's ,show. What it was, in essence, was a. re -run of portions of Ed's last show, 23 years after he first began his Sunday evening variety hours. And strange that they should choose as the host, a comedian who, by his own admission, made only one ap- pearance with Ed, Dick Cavett. So many of Ed's favorite comedy men returned to his show four Or five times a year. - When you looked at the hour- long tribute, you couldn't help but think of all the great, great stars Ed featured on his show, either introducing them or featuring them throughout the years. I had forgotten the impact that Barbra Streisand made that first night, a lost kid looking like she gradu- ated from frump school in that miles -too -big raincoat and her stringy hair. But man, could that gal sing a song! Jackie Gleason - was he ever as thin as that classic sketch showed him? Judy Garland - even when she sang "Smile", her voice cried. The Beatles - and what on earth were the girls screaming for?? The funny men like Alan King, Rodney Dangerfield, My- ron Floren and you could bet if a dirty joke ever made it past Ed, that comic was never back. And do you remember the icy stare he could give if someone from the audience was mouthing at a per- former? A no-nonsense man, that was Ed. And yet, if the occasion called for it, Ed could ham it up with the best. As Cavett pointed out, he represented to all of us the ordi- nary guy who made it to stardom but not because.he was a great performer, only a great promot- er, Those were the good old days when stars were on television, variety shows were family enter- tainment and performers were proud to be on stage at the Ed Sullivan Theatre. One more phase of entertainment over, hours we took for granted. With last week's special, we see again just how much entertainment he packed into one hour. She has been dead for more than ten years. But her star shines as brightly row as it did when she was a resident of Holly- wood and a personality whom everyone at least paid attention to, if not sympathized with. It is a 1 good thing to keep memories alive but with everything that has been written about Marilyn Mon- roe - movies, plays, television shows, books, etc. - and not all of it doing honor to that memory, you sometimes want to ask "Why don't they let the poor girl rest in peace?" kins 8 and 10 My Three Sons 13 Hollywood Squares 6 5:00 Ironside 13 Hogan's Heroes 8 Partridge Family 10 Gilligan's Island 6 5:30 Partridge Family 8 Dick Van Dyke 10 Hogan's Heroes 6 6:00 News 8 10, 13,• 6 6:30 The Brady Buneh 13 Gunsmoke 8 Movie 'A Streetcar Nam- ed Desire' 6 7:00 That's My Mama 13 Little House on The Prairie 10 7:30 Bobby Goldsboro Show 13 Living Faith 8 8:00 This Land 8 and 10 Movie • 'Kremlin Letter' 13 8:30 Canada Winter Games 8 and 10 9:00 Mac Davis Show 6 10:00 Global News Hour 6 10:30 Pacificanada 8 and 10 Newscope 13 11:0,0 The National 8, 10, 13 , World of Wicks 6 11:20 Local News 8, 10, 13 11:30 Movie 'The Great Bank Robbery' 6 11:45 Mery .Griffin 8 Chase 10 12:00 Movie 'The Hanged Man' 13 1:35 Concern 13 'TIS Show BIZ by Vonni Lee Now she is coming to radio, in a musical play written by Toronto composer Cliff Jones. It will be heard on CBC Radio's "The En-, tertainers" on Sunday, the 16th, at 1:03 p.m.; our best -received station is CBL. It will also be on CBC -FM in stereo on Saturday at 4:03. Beverly'- D'Angelo will make- her akeher radio debut in the title role of "Hey Marilyn". 'Her supporting cast includes Cal and Rory Dodd, brothers from Port Dover, Peter and Barbara Law, Rudy Webb, . David George and Cathy Young. There is very little dialogue but 40 individual pieces of music will be scattered throughout the production. Jones currently has a success- ful production of Shakespeare's "Hamlet" which he wrote as a pop musical. It was successfully transposed to the stage last summer at the Charlottetown Festival and begins a Canadian tour in May, returning to Charlottetown in July. It is set to open on Broadway in the fall. So you can see great things ahead for "Hey Marilyn" if it is as Successful as his previous effort. Is any of this really helping Marilyn's memory stay alive? I doubt it. For those of us who -want to remember her, we will do so anyway - as a tragic and lonely person for whom the world of show business was only a. way to get attention( YOUR HANDWRITING"T Pointed hint quick By Dow= ST.
