North Huron Credit Union
holds first annual .meeting
The North Huron Credit Union
held its first annual meeting and
gala celebration in the Belgrave
Women's Institute Hall Friday,
and the guest speaker shared the
spotlight with a ''bat. The furry
party -crasher made its flying
entrance during a dinner that
preceeded the meeting and
caused merry chaos among the
more than 100 members and
guests. The bat was finally for-
cibly evicted by Sydney Thomp-
son, temporary hero for the.
evening.
Guest speaker Don Smith of the
United Church Men gave due
credit to his predecessor: "It's
the first time I've ever had to
follow a bat," he quipped. .Mr.
Smith then continued in a more
serious tone as he praised the
efforts and accomplishments of
the credit union. He said the first
annual meeting was a very im=
portant occasion. "When you
achieve something ... then you
have reason to come together and
to celebrate." Mr. Smith also;:,
marked it as a. time for decision,
making and reflection on "wher
yoU 6 are 1'` and Wi use s' ou ;.
going."
He said the credit union move-
, ment was "setting ideal.: -into
practice. There is a big idea that
we all need -to be concerned about
. . . and recognize. The credit
union is a practical expression of
that big idea ... that we are all on
this planet interdependent . . .
that people count most of all."
Mr. Smith praised the credit
union for placing an emphasis on
value, helping each other and the
practice of thrift. He warned,
however, that the movement
should beware of "the perils of
success and growth" and of
losing the personal touch. He
urged credit union members to
investigate the new field of
education and youth as a new
"expression of hope and confi-
dence" in the. future.
It was the first meeting of the
North Huron Credit Union mem-
bers since the amalgamation of
the Belgrave and Wingham
