A great loss to the world. ,of
opera came recently with tbe
sudden death of Richard Tucker.
Ticker died in Kalamazoo,
Michigan, while on tour,' aP4.=.
parently as the result of a heart '
attack. Ile was 61.
A tenor with the 'Metropolitan
Opera in New'fork, he had the
distinction of beineone of the
performers' who had beeti vdth
the Met the longest. He made his
debut there In 1945. The climax of
this tour was to be a Carnegie
Hall concert on February 6, but
after his death, the tour was can-
celled.
Thirty years with what is con-
sidered the finest Opera' company
in the world is certairdy nothing
to sneeze at. Whether or not yoti
like opera, you-muit admit that
kind of tatent is not a run-of-the-

TODAY'S HEALTH
Catching the tartar
before it forms on teeth
by David Woods
Plaque and Floss may sound like
a couple of old-style vaudeville
laughing matter: plaqUe is a wide-
spread dental Problem - and floss
Is the only serious way of coming
to grips with it.
Plaque- is soft, sticky stuff that
clings to the teeth; it's caused by an
interaction of food, saliva and bac-
teria. If it isn't removed; it bardens
into something called tartar, which
accumulates in much the same way
as barnacles do„On the bottom of a
boat, and has to be taken off in the
same fashion - by scraping.
That's what your dentist does on
your regular checkup visit, but you
can help your deritist - and your-
self - by seeing to it that plaque
doesn't build up in the first place.
Which is where dental floss comes
You can get rid of most plaque
by proper brushing. But. not all of
it. Dental floss is a length of thread,
sometimes waxed, and sold in a
small plastic dispenser for easy use
