"Well, there's not many of us,"!•
Harry Harding, master of cere
monies for the Carnival on Ice
show, said to open last F'riday's
performance at the' Winghiam
arena.,Mr. Harding, who is also
the troupe's manager and singer,
was referring to the :small crowd'
in attendance, and he was right
there were few people sitting in
the stands.
A disappointing turn -out of
about 50 sat through the two-hour
performance, warmed only by a,
professional display of skating
talents featuring an :international
ca$ .
It's a disappointing crowd,
though?" Mr. Harding Was asked
in the warmth of the dressing
roof. corridor' duri "'`n t rime
``Oh, that's an understate=
ment," f , he replied glumly.. A
.small 'crowd can dale a d&ri-
mental effect on a performTance.
Performers often respond with
better displays of talent when a
large crowd is present. It can be
difficult to perform when the
members of the cast almost equal
the size df the audience and ap-
plause echos through an almost
empty arena. Especially since
the night before the Carnival on
Ice group played to an overflow
crowd at the Gardens Arena in St.
Catharines.
The troupe showed their pro-
fessionalism
rofessionalism by presenting a
bright and cheery performance,
highlighted by colorful produc-
tion numbers and exciting solo
performances. Mr. Harding not-
ed after the show that the skaters
worked as hard for the small
audience as they have for the
larSer ones and only regretted
that more people from Winghamdidn't see the show. •
The performers' enthusiasm
and professionalism was typified
by Johan Kyndyke, a- native of
the Netherlands, who performed
the clown's segment of the pro-
gram. Mr. Kyndyke said that he
skated for the pure pleasure of it,
that evening and had a lot of fun,
the small crowd being no deter-
rent to his enthusiasm.
Mr. Harding was perplexed
about the small turnout. He had
no ready answers for it. Maybe
the price was too high, he mused.
Or maybe the town was suspici-
ous as to the calibre of the troupe.
Mr. Harding emphasized the
troupe's professionalism. He

year$ of professional skating
experience and other members of
the troupe had skated for gther
shows such as the Ice Follies, Ice
Capades, Holiday on Ice, and the
Vienna Ice Review.
The ;show began appropriately
with a Winter Wonderland pro-
duction. Frank O'Doud skated
next, putting on the first of two
sparkling solo performances. The
Robertson Family, a father,
mother, son and daughter act,
brought their juggling talents to
the ice surface.
In the second part of the show
the family returned and the
father put on a unique balancing
display. Ile clambered, with
skates on, onto a board balanced
on a barrel resting on top of a
table. Then, he put a 14 -inch hoop
through one leg, over his head
and under his other leg while still
maintaining his precarious bal-
ance. The night before he had
SANTA CLAUS and the Brussels Snow Queen get acquaint-
ed at Saturday afternoon's parade. Charming and talented
Maxine Watts was chosen as the queen last Thursday
evening in the' Brussels Public School auditorium. Runners-
up were Dianne Willis and Michelle McCutcheon. The girls
were ludged on looks, personality and talent.

fallen during this portion of his
act but performed it precisely on
Friday..
Manny Del Toro performed a
sparkling solo -followed by Johan
Kyndyke':s clowanish impersona-
tion of a ballet dancer on skates.
He skated, and`eil, to tie: tune of

light. :1
Eight skaters performed a
classical waltz with Mr.,dnd Mrs.
Harold Avery of. Brantford,
known as the Old Smoothies,
joining them. The Averys proved
skating is for the young at heart
as well as the young in age.
After an intermission; the
troupe put on a contemporary hot
pants number with the four

a vinge thattmperature in skihot pants.
Also in the second act Manny Del
Toro performed some barrel
jumping. His last leap was over
10 barrels but he was dissatisfied
with the arrangement and re-
placed the ninth barrel with his
wife. To the relief of the audi-
ence, and certainly to his wife,
Manny easily cleared the hurdle.
The clown returned again and
played a little golf with an over-
sized plastic golf ball and a
dilapidated golf club. He proved
to be a much better skater than
golfer and finished his routine
with some nifty skating, at times
bent almost prone to the ice
surface.
The troupe finished with . an
Aquarius production number and
all gathered on the ice to the ap-
plause of the audience.
The show is in its first year of
existence. It is on a two-week tour
of Ontario centres, including
Corn*all and Owen Sound,
finishing this weekend. It played
Hamilton the night following
the Wingham show.
Mr. Harding noted the major
problem of organizing the show
was finding available arenas.
Most are booked with hockey or
other programs. The troupe has
played before greatly varying
sizes of audiences and a financial
summary at the end of the tour
will decide whether similar
events will be arranged for next
year. Elgard Productions Ltd. of
Toronto is the show's producer.
