.OPP CONSTABLE JOHN WRAY warned those gathered at the Turnberry Township Fed-
eration of Agriculture meeting, Nov. 26 in Belmore, about the legal perils of snowmobilers
being injured on their property. The constable also spoke on highway traffic safety and
farm transportation regulations in the Highway Traffic Act. (Staff Photo) .
Turnberry OFA annual
endorses Whelan policies
Even if farmers are unaware of
a snowmobiler's presence on
their property, they still can be
held liable for any snowmobiler's
accident, OPP Constable John
Wray warned Nov. 26 in Belmore.
Speaking to the Turnberry
TOWnship Federation of Agricul-
ture meeting, Const. Wray was
baffled asto what farmers can do
to Protect themselves.
really don't know what to
est to you," he said.
nst. Wranentienee•the re-
cent Supreme Court ruling which
gave damages to a snowmobiler
injured on an industrial property
even though the company was
unaware of his presence.
If trespassing signs are posted,
farmers can lay trespassing
charges but it doesn't protect
them from possible lawsuits.
Const. Wray said that legis-
lationpending will require snow-
mobilers to have written per-
mission from property owners to
use their land. But when the
legislation will be passed is un-
certain.
Const. Wray also discussed
highway safety and traffic regu-
lations regarding farm trans-
portation.
He mentioned that the number
of traffic charges laid by police is
done for the public's own protec-
tion.
"You have to lay these charges
or your accidents can't be con-
tained,", he said. "The more we
lay the Less accidents we have,"
the constable added.
Const. Wray went through a
pamphlet on farm transportation
highway regulations and urged
the meeting to follow them.
"It does .pay to stay within the
limits o what the Highway
Traffic Act says," Const. Wray
stated.
He warned them about straying
from the act and the possible con-
sequences, such as lawsuits, ,if
they ignore the regulations. deliciioua beef;
