I sacrificed a couple of hours
shut -eye and instead of going
beddy-byes one late evening re-
cently, decided I would watch
Mery Griffin, and his late night
blab show. Turned out the show
was a 'Meet the wives' night and
he explained it was a show
similar to that show that won an
Emmy for him last season. Big
deal! Emmys must have been
cheap! That is hardly a great
example of the finest he has to
offer.
So one by one, he introduces
these lovely little beauties
Mrs. Johnny Carson, Mrs. Bing
Crosby, Mrs. Dean Martin, the ex
Mrs. Dick Martin, Mrs. Sammy
Davis, Mrs. Stuart Whitman and
Mrs. George Hamilton. And one
by one, ,they rave about how
`great', `terrific', 'fantastic',
`super', `lovable' and 'charming'
their `gorgeous' husbands are.
But, since they married the cads,
you'd hope they would think they
were all these things. Even Dolly
(Reed) Martin, in the process of
divorcing her funnyman mate,
Dick (of "Laugh -In" fame), kept
saying how fantastic he was.
Sounded a bit offbeat for a gal
heading for the divorce courts.
I couldn't help but feel sorry for

these women whose tiny little
worlds revolve' around parties,
furs, jewellery, world tours
where they see only more furs
and jewellery, a phony world of
make-believe where, if they ever
had to cope with a real problem,
they couldn't. Typical of the
pretend world they live in, was
funny, girl Dolly trying too hard to
be funny. Mery hit the nail on the
head when he told her she was
`laughing on the outside, crying
on the inside', though she
vehemently denied it.
Strangely enough, the gal who
came across as being the most
personable, honest and just plain
`people', was Cathy Martin, a girl
who has been labelled everything
from `home-wreckir' to `reckless
spender'. The wife of singer
Dean, she has tried 'hard to liye
down his image of boozer, woman
chaser and partyer and she
hasn't succeeded, but has only
created a few cheap names for
herself. In real life, she and Dolly
Reed are best friends, she the
