The rooln. is 1 int, 6 inches by 10feet, 6 WINO with a small French -type w recessed between book- lves which cover the whole north wall of the room. The window is 3 by leek,: 6 inchs but has 6 li>wcl#ea of wall space as each side. Sliould 1 curtain the whole open area? Below the window is ,a'built-in fiat-, zine rack. The . room is paneled with a very sonde - script wood. The floor 1 par* quet but not in good condition. The sliding closet doors are plywood . and not finished all the walls. The whole room .is dull and drab. I plan so far to paint the ceiling white and carpet the floor. The rest of the house is carpeted in a shat shag, of muted shades of light green, gold and brown. I have used shades of rust .and yellow also with this carpet. Would it be best to continue this carpeting into the den? We have, at present, an organ and small desk in this room. I plan to add a small couch and chair. I have a three-foot rattan type couch and chair which I bought in Mexico that I could use. It is low and open so it would not seem bulky. What can I do with the walls, closet doors and window to liven and brighten this room? I need • window treatment that can be closed at night as we face a busy street. M.H. A. If your paneling is a lightly finished wood, you might lightly sand it and an- tique the walls gold. Thin the paint down so that you will have the grain of the wood but a glaze of color should lighten the room. Treat the closet r doors the same so yotl hsye an all-over look. Instead of a white mi , why not * very, very light goki? And 1 would thunk the same a carpet would „be fine in your room. Why not repeat the 11 at green and gold and hopefully *'bright yellow, too, in the cuw Tions of your rattan furniture? Use the shades that blend, with the carpet, of course. Take some of the gay cushion fabric and laminate it to a'window Made for inside your bookshelves and cover a cornice in the same fabric for .a gay window treatment. Make the shade large enough to cover the win- dow and the edges of It .comm- fortably, Accent with bright yellow in cushions, picture frames and waste let, Add a large mirror. Perhaps, one of those handee Mexican pierced tin -framed mirrors: would be a happy selection. ' Q. We have a large two- story home with narrow hall on the first floor right by the stairs. The telephone is lo- cated in the hallway and seems to create . a terrible traffic jam - when our teen- agers are talking, and some- one else tries to walk through. Also all the telephone lines are dangerous the way they are stretched here and there. I am just about ready to have a wall phone installed but that idea isn't very popular. What would be.a good solution? — T.W. A. One family I have seen solved a very similar problem by creating a telephone booth, and a very commodious one, in the wasted space under the stairs. They created a door that - swung open, added a shelf inside, a chair, hanging light and bulletin .board . for taking messages. To add to its appeal they wallpapered the interior with a gay plaid. It keeps the bodies and cords out of the hallway. There's only one trouble. It's such a com- fortable little nook, people seem to talk a very long time. =However, this is one solution. Q. We havea very boxy din- .tingarea at one end of our liv- 4tigrixithe One whir& old'nat- ural brick. Two other walls I'd like to panel. Or do you have another suggestion for wall eatment? We like rather tic things. — T.A.H. A. I would think that wood paneling would be lovely to combine with brick. Perhaps to give wider dimension to your area you might try in- stalling the paneling horizon- tally instead of the usual vertical way. It can be very effective in visually widening a small area. Keep the wood a light natural — not too dark, so you'll keep the area more spacious looking. MUSICAL -The musk is neither jarring nor canned when this musical mobile plays in a gentle breeze. 'CHILD'S PLAY Jar lids make wind chimes By BUROKER & HUNTSINGER In some parts of the coun- try, jar lids used for canning and preserving have been hard to come by this year when the smell of jam and pickle making has filled many kitchens. Housewives can't use the same lids over again because their whole purpose is to seal the jar so tightly there is no possibility.of air entering to spoil the food that is being put up for winter eating. And it only takes nine of these flat disks • to make a combination mobile and wind chime. First spray or paint them and let them dry thoroughly. Then hammer two nail holes, one at the top and bottom of each lid. This may take some time or, perhaps, your father or a friend can speed the job by using an electric drill.
