Dear Dorothy: ,
I am dedicated to my work.
It is rather difficult to explain
this to my wife and children.
They expect nye to spend time
with them in the evening and
on weekends, but my work is
more important if I am to' get
ahead in life.
Mr. V. M.
Dear Mrs. V.M.:

work addict is not. It pays rich
rewards to know the differ-

hand slant of writing, insecu-
rity motivates your addiction.
It is a part of your makeup to
fear, even reject, a 'warm,
personal relationship. The de-
tachment you feel, through
deep involvement in your
work, gives you a "safer"
feeling.
Your open brief case helps
\you to • escape the lashing
problems of everyday living.
Thumbing through books and
papers builds a barrier
against any invasion upon
your ego, seen in the very tall
is and d's.
By placing such false em-
phasis on your work, you pay
less attention to your family,
you become less a person, and
you are less and less able to
love and live a full life. You
keep reaching out to gain your
basic need for love, seen in the
large beginning hook on the
capital I.
'But, because you find it im-
possible to show how you feel
by the way you act, you be-
come discouraged, and return
to your work with greater de-
termination than ever.
Break the barrier which
surrounds your ego. Return
from your island of escape.
Admit to yourself that you
have a problem. Then, like
any other addict, take steps to
"kick the habit."
Save yourwife from becom-
ing a neurotic and your chil-
dren from being rebels — as
you gain that much needed
security for yourself, through
an admission of your exces-
sive behavior.

QUESTIONS WOMEN ASK
New test detects
pregnancy sooner
By ELEANOR B.
RODGERSON, M.D:
Q. How soon can a woman
determine whether or not she
is pregnant?
A. Up -until now, women
have been advised to wait for
about two weeks after' a
missed menstrual .period be-
fore getting a urinary test to
determine the presence of the
hormone elaborated with a
pregnancy. There is a small
percentage of false negatives.
Consequently, when this test
Wratigatiikitriris to bei . e-
peated in one or two weeks.
Now there is a new test that
will soon be available that is
said to, be reliable 100 per cent
as early as one day after a
missed menstrual period: In
fact, it will detect pregnancy
• four to six days after ovula-
tion, possibly before the egg
implants in the wall of the
uterus. Blood from if finger
pinprick is used and the test
takes 60 minutes. - •
Why is it important to diag-
nose pregnancy so early? If
an abortion is to be induced,
the earlier it is done, the few-
er the complications. If there
is a tubal pregnancy, the ear-
lier it can be diagnosed, the
earlier it can be removed be-
fore rupture endangers the.
pateint's life. And so on.
Q. I have been taking birth
control pills for about one
year and the doctor told me,
on my last visit, that I had a
small cyst on the right ovary.
He said to come back in a
month 'for another check-up.
Did the birth control pills
..cause this cyst?
A. No. There are several
different kinds of ovarian
cysts. Some you are born
with, some you develop as you
ovulate and produce hor-
mones, and some are cancer-
ous.
If you are on the oral con-
traceptives that work by pre-
venting ovulation, you should
not develop the kind of cyst
that is called "functional,"
that comes as a result of the
process of ovulation. The
birth control pills should pre-
vent this kind of cyst from de-
ve loping .
If you were born with this
cyst ( congenital), it may not
have been noticed until you
began to have more frequent
examinations for contracep-
tive purposes. If it is a cancer -
type, it developed for some
unknown reason and these
malignancies occurred long
before birth control pills were

If an enlargement is not defi-

sure by letting a little time
pass and then re-examining.
