farmed all his life. Active in
commurdty life, Mr. Hopper was
a councillor of the Belgrave
branch of United Co-operatives of
Ontario; a MeMber of the
Belgrave Arena Board; a past
president of the Tri -County
Hockey Association; a past
president of Monis Township
Federation of Agriculture; and
for many years served as coach
of hockey and ball teams. He was
a member of the Belgrave United
Church.
Left to mourn his passing are
his Wife, the former Jean Sharpin
of Bluevale, whom he married in
Wroxeter on April 19, 1947; two
daughters, Mrs. Jack (Marjorie)
Van Niekerk of Barrie and
Debbie at home; four sons, Brian
of Listowel, Wayne of Morris
Township, Ken of Barrie and
Gary athome; and three grand-
daughters. He is also survived by
onesister, Mrs. Thomas (Muriel)
Garniss of Brussels. He was
predeceased by one sister, Mrs.
Lloyd (Laura) Alcock of
Walkerton in 1972.
Funeral service was conducted
Tuesday, August 13, at 2 p.m. at .
the S. J. Walker Ptmeral Home
by Rev. Barry Passmore of
Wingham. Interment followed in
Brandon Cemetery, Belgrave.
Pallbearers were Jack
Higgins, George Higgins, Ross
Higgins, Charles Higgins, Glenn
Coultes and Bill Coultes. Flower
bearers were Harvey Edgar, Bill
Elston, Ross Procter and George
Procter.

Funeral service was held
'Saturday at two o'clock at the S.
J. Walker Funeral Home, Wing -
ham, for Robert John Laidlaw of
RR 3, Wingham. Larry King of-
ficiated and interment followed
in Wingham Cemetery. .
Pallbearers were Ivan Laid-
law, ElrOy Laidlaw, Elmer
Sleightholm, Russel Chapman,
Milian Moore and Garnet
Farrier. Two grandsOns of the
deceased,..lim Laidlaw and Greg
Laidlaw, carried floral tributes to
the graveside.
Mr. Laidlaw passed away
Wednesday, August 14, at the
home of his son, Clifford. He was
in his 81st year. He was born in
West Wawanosh Township, a son
of the late Joseph Laidlaw and
Betsy Raton. He was a veteran
of the First World War where he
served in the 71st Batthlion.
The late Mr. Laidlaw, who was
a member of the Whitechurch
United Church, farmed all his
life.
Surviving are his wife, the
former Violet May Bidgood
whom he married in Whitechurch
In April of 1919; three sons, Clif-
ford of RR 3, Wingham, Ray-
mond and Arthur of Wingham;
five grandchildren and three
great grandchildren. There are
two sisters, Anrde and Mary of
RR 1, Lucknow, arid one brother,
Herbert, of Lucknow.
It is likely that when
Europeans arrived there were
about 22,000 Inuit in what is now
Canada - slightly more than at
present.

dies following
long illness
Following a lengthy illness,
Mrs. Alvin Stacey passed away at
the Wingham and District
Hospital on Friday, August 2. The
deceased who resided at RR 2,
Wingham, was in her 49th year.
Born in Wingham on November
13, 1925, Mrs. Stacey was the
former Lillian Doreen Mc-
Dougall, a daughter of Leslie
McDougall and the former Lillian
Garniss of Wingham. She at-
tended school in Lower Wingham
and trained as a nurse, serving
with the Women's Royal
Canadian Naval Service.
She was a member of the
Presbyterian Church.
Surviving, besides her parents,
are her husband whom she
married in Wingham in 1946; four
daughters, Mrs. Brian (Sherry)
Leachman and Mrs. Henry
(Delores) Carter, both of
Wingham; Donna and Tammy,
both at home; and four sons,
Danny, ,john, William and
chard,' all of Wingham. Also
surviving are six grandchildren;
two sisters, Mrs. Ted (Shirley)
Foxton and Mrs. Robert
(Dorothy) Ruttan, both of
Wingham; and six brothers,
,Reginald of Vancouver, Jack of
Ingersoll, Harry, Robert and
Terry all of Wingham and
William of Petrolia.
The late Mrs. Stacey rested at
the R. A. Currie and Son Funeral
Home, Wingham, where service
was conducted Monday, August
5, at 2 p.m. by Capt. Albert
Murkin of the Salvation Army.
Interment followed in Wingham
Cemetery.

Wednesday, August 14, at the S.
J. Walker Funeral Home for
Albert Garfield Vincent of
Belgrave. Rev. Barry Passmore
of Wingham officiated at the two
o'clock ceremony and interment
followed in Union Cefnetery,
Blyth.
Pallbearers were six grand-
sons, Barry Logan, Murray
Vincent, Donald Vincent, Neil
Vincent, Wayne Vincent and
Gary MacSween. Grandsons
Grant Vincent and Paul Vincent
carried floral tributes. '
Mr. Vincent died Sunday,.
August 11, at Pinecrest Manor
Nursing Home, Lucknow. He had
been in failing health for the past
year.
Born 89 years ago in Usborne
Township, he was a son of the late.
Menno Vincent and Ann Bentley.
At an early age he moved, with
his parents, to East Wawanosh
Township. In 1907 he went to
Alberta where he was among the
first homesteaders in the Milk
River area.
In 1912 he married Bertha
McDowell of East Wawanosh
Township and they lived in
Alberta for five years before
returning to the eighth con-
cession of East Wawanosh where
they farmed until 1950,
whereupon they retired to
Belgrave, His wife died in 1965
and in 1967 he married Winifred
Smith whe survives.
Also surviving are two
daughters, Mrs. Cliff (Dorothy)
Logan of Belgrave and Mrs. Roy
(Edna) MacSween of Morris
Township; two sons, Harold of
Belgrave and ,Leslie of Oakville;
12 grandchildren and nine great
grandchildren. There is one
brother, Percy, of Bluevale.
The late Mr. Vincent was a
member of Knox United Church,
Belgrave.

dies in hospital
The last surviving member of
familyof eleven, Robert
Davidson of Brussels died in the
Wingham and District Hospital
on Thursday, August 8, following
a two-month illenss. He was in his
95th year.
Born in York County, Mr.
Davidson was a son of the late
Thomas and Christine Davidson.
He was predeceased by seven
brothers and three sisters. He
was educated in Huron County
and farmed in Grey Township
most of his life. He retired about
ten years' ago.
Left to mourn his passing are
three sons, George of Brussels,
Charles of Wingham and Scott of
Port Elgin; three daughters,
Agnes of New Liskeard, Jean of
Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, and
Gladys of Ottawa; 19 grand-
e,hildren id great gran -
children. He *as predeceased by
his wife, the former Sarah
Gertrude Hollenbeck, in 1969; one
son Harvey and one daughter
Ethel.
The late Mr. Davidson rested at
the Watt Funeral Home, Brus-
sels, where funeral service' was
conducted Saturday, August 10,
at two o'clock by Rev. C. A. Mc-
Carrol of Melville Presbyterian
Church, Brussels" where
deceasedwas a member. In-
terment was in Brussels
Cemetery.
Pallbearer's were Jack
Davidson, Brent Davidson, Bill
Glassier, Graham Jackson, Dave
Robinson and David Lott. Floral
tributes were carried to the
graveside by James Lott, Wayne
Jackson, Richard Robinson,
Joseph Lott and Douglas

UCW visits
hospital
'WHITECHURCH - On Tues-
day, August 13, the members of
the local United Church Women
went to the Goderich Psychiatric
Hospital where 11 members held
a picnie with their penpals at the
hospital's picnic grounds by the
lakeside.
Mrs. Milian Moore -and Mrs.
George Thompsont,,,,conducted
contests and humorous games.
Sing -songs were also enjoyed by
all.
Lunch was served by the UCW
after which all visited with their
penpals.

1973-74 winter season. Marine_
seismic programs are being
undertaken north of the Yukon
border during the summer,. An
environmental program, as a
requisite to the Beaufort Sea
drilling, got under way during the
early spring and is continuing all
