Create your own abstract
By BUROKER &
The subjett of abstract art
causes a lot of controversy
and many people inunediate-
. ly say they don't like it. As is
often the case, one might be
"turned off" by something
which is not understandable.
The dictionary . offers, as
one meanin,g for the word ab-
stract, "nonrepresentational
designs depicting no recogif
able thing, ' and, to many,
must look like something al-
ready familiar.
It is interesting to look at
paintings or books and inves-
tigate some of the well-known ,
artists who have dedicated
themselves to this particular
medium. ,
To - create some abstract
paintings of your oWn, which
actually is not as simple to do
as one first thinks, you might
try the following method as a
first step in investigating the
entire subject.
Wet white construction pa-
per with a sponge or a' wide
'but not soaked. Next, choose"
several bright -colors of your
choice from an ordinary paint
box. Drop these onto the pa-
per in 'strategic points.
You will see that when the
paint dab tOuchei the wet pa-
per it will spread out in a sun
bufst fashion that can never
quite be duplicated by ordi-
nary brush work. You' will .
have to plan your picture for,
of course,. it can't be changed
once the paint is applied.
For variation, if you want
the paint to "run," pick up one
cprner and tilt the paper so
two colors can mix and blend.
However, remember that
since you can't plan this type
of work, you can't have set no-

from its very unpredictabil-
Chances are you will make
several pictures before one
really satisfies you since this
is . strictly an experimental
and create -as -you -go type of
project. By liiniting a picture
to just one or two colors, a
stylized design will result.
On the other hand, donl at-
tempt to use too many colors
as there is a tendency for t,00
much "busyness" to result
and the tones will get murky.
There is really no way you can
plan a formalized design or
realistic picture, but there is a
different kind of satisfaction
to be found in creating ab-
stract art,
Actually, serious artists
spend long hours and much
energy planning and execut-
ing a genuine painting even if
some viewers dismiss the re-
, sults and say such works look
like blobs. If you compared
your spotted and dotted ef-
, forts with genuine abstracts,
you will soon see, there is a
very real difference.
Put you can have some good
fun with this project and then,
perhaps, further enjoy learn-
ing What serious masters
have atteinpted through this
particular art form. •

What causes tetanus is entry of

Bathftib Crack
That inevitable cnick that appears
between the bathtub and the wall
tiles is caused by the tub's being
filled and einptied several times a
week — plus the people climbing in
and out of the tub — and this fre-
quent weight change eventually
splits the plaster or grout along the
joint. This can be remedied easily by
caulking the joint around the entire
rim of the tub wilh a waterproof
flexible caulking compound.
