The sae holds true for cable and wire as well as poles, said the Hydro official. "Unless customers can give us substantially more lead time," Mr. Carlough said, "we won't be able to provide them with the electrical equipment they need on time." Manufacture of transformers is being held up both by a steel shortage and a scarcity of the special oil they use. In addition, the oil. shortage has reduced, the supply of plastics used for elec- trical insulation with the result that cable and wire can take up to six months to deliver. To meet the shortage in trans- former oils, Ontario Hydro is in- vestigating ways of recondition- ing oils from old transformers for use in new ones. A concentrated effort is being made to reclaim or rehabilitate worn-out equipment. The use of white spruce, abun- dant in Ontario and Quebec, is being investigated as a possible substitute for western cedar poles which have been in short supply since 1973. Various reasons are given for the material shortages—among them environmental demands that diverted production to cleanup devices, inflation which created additional stimulus °to demand and the excess'Manufac- turing capacity of 1970 and 1971 that discouraged expansion that mighthave met today's shortfall. No accurate predictions can be made on when the steel shortage will ease, but it is expected it will continue through 1974. SOME POINTS TO REMEMBER: Recognize this odd couple? It's the business end of a set of ignition points that are about to go out of business. Some car owner has experienced hard starting and poor engine performance, unaware of the advanced state of deteriora- tion of this vital ignition part. Car Care Council reminds motorists that, for maximum gas mileage and minimum exhaust pollution, an engine must be kept in tune. TAKE A LOOK AT THESE brake shoes from a car .. "seemed to be stepping okay .. just pulling a little bit to one side." Brake linings worn to this extreme are not only a safety hazard, they also damage the brake drums. The result: a higher than normal repair. bill; Note, too, that the wear on the left side is=<much greater than on the right, a good case in point for having all four brakes checked instead of just one or two. To maintain fresh quality meat in the freezer, protect it — and your meat . dollar always wrapping meat carefully before freezing, say food special- ists at the Ontario Food -Council, Ministry 'of Agriculture and Food. The wrapping on fresh, meat is to protect it against over - handling. However, this type, of wrapping lets the fresh meat "breathe", so that it is unsuited to long-term freezing in very cold and, dry air. Freezer air would pull moisture from improperly wrapped meat and leave you with a dry, tasteless and tough Before popping it in the freezes • Preserving cut flowers Arrangements of cut flowers often provide an added spark of color in the living areas of our homes. But,their relatively short life means frequent water changes and replacement of the bouquets. Dave Sangster, a horti- culturist with the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Flood, points out that the vase life of cut flowers can be extended by a one of the many floral preservatives available from your local retail florist.
