The annual award, whichwas born in 1967, is given .to ani in- dividual or group who has ac- complished great things in the fields of the arts, natural and social sciences, humanities, bus- iness or industry. Mr. Gascon has been connected with the Festival in Stratford for almost as long as the Festival has been in existence. He first came there in 1956. In 1964 he was nam- ed associate director and in 1967 he became artistic director. Name the greatest plays you have seen •at Stratford within those years lad chances are Gascon will be the director. . Before coming to Stratford he was, for 15 years, artistic director at the Theatre du Nou- veau Monde in his native Mon- treal. He also helped found the National Theatre School in Mon- treal. .This is Mr. Gascon's last sea- son at Stratford. He is directing what will probably .become the three hits of the season: the fine comedy and William Hutt-starrer which they have just brought home from Australia, • "The Imaginary Invalid"; Shake- speare's romantic "Pericles"; and at 'the Avon Theatre, a trib- ute to life, in Paris, "La Vie; Par- isienne". After the season ends, he plans . to travel, though a master like Gascon is not likely to be idle too long and his travelling could.easily turn into a study per- iod. In January he will begin his rehearsals for Eugene O'Neill's. "Long Day's Journey Into Night" which he will direct and in which he will have an acting role. It•will open at Theatre du Nouveau Monde in March of next year. Presentation of the award will take place at an awards dinner in Stratford on May 21. He is,the first. person in the perforing arts to win the award; other win- ners have been a neurosurgeon, a rehabilitation expert, Paul -Emile Cardinal Leger and novelist YOU can have tun figuring out your message from the Orient by use of this pleasant Ilttle letter pussle.
