Terrorism in a world context
A sobering thought of our 20th
century is that terrorism breeds
terrorism.
As former Home Secretary in
the present British Government
Reginald Maudling spoke of re-
, ducing violence to an acceptable
level in Northern Ireland. But Ul-
ster people claim — with com-
plete justification — that there is
no acceptable level of violence in
a civilized community. Terror-
ism must be dealt with wherever
it appears. Terrorism in Ireland°
today can lead to terrorism else-
where tomorrow.
Now the terrorist campaign
has been carried across the Irish
Sea to English cities like London
and Birmingham. The terrorists
claim that their campaign of
violence has resulted in the aboli-
tion of the parliament of,
Northern Ireland and the setting
up of new structures which have
brought Irish unity a few steps
nearer. One last.. push they feel
will bring their ultimate objec-
tive of a United Ireland to fruit
tion. It is questionable, however,

more acceptable to the IRA than

been.
Today a number of young Ia-ish
terrorists are serving prison sen-
tences in English jails for their
part in a pre Christmas bombing
campaign in London. •
Now an influential monarchj$t
newspaper published in Madrid
(Spain) claims that the IRA may
have had a hand in the Basque
terrorists activities that led to the
death of Spain's Prime Minister
Admiral Luis Carrero Blanco on
22nd December 1973.
The newspaper alleges that the

Terrorism today is , bemiring
more sophisticated., more lethal
and more international.
According to report's in The
Times newspaper published in
Great Britain on 6th ianuary
1974, Libya, under its leader col-
onel Gadaffi, is financing 'world-
wide terrorist organisation to
the tune of 250 million • dans-
About 214 million dollars is being
given to the IRA in militaq said
and training, says the report
which is confirmed byWally

reliable sources in Kuwait and
Brussels. The sources .also

One thing is predictable. We
haven't heard the last of ter-
rorism. Or of the efforts of ter-
rorists throughout the' world to
imposetheir Will on governments
and`" people, by the bomb and. the
bullet.
Eternal vigilance is still the
price of freedom.
