The white diamond has been
associated with romance since
early Greek times. In .fact, the

the Greek "adaa," meaning

Why are bridal gowns white?
According to fashion history, at
one time wedding gowns ran the
gamut of colors: blue; pinks, yel-;
lows, ;and •even red! Then, in 1799,
Nellie Custis• started a trend by
choosing a.white silk gown for her
wedding to George Washington's
favorite nephew..
By 1818, whitegowns were so
popularthat white became the
traditional bridal color.

White diamonds and white ,wedding gowns are still bridal
favorites, but , they've taken on a modern flair\ This lovely

"The White bridal headpiece also

she never looked prettier, She
decided to wear a: white lace bead

Although flowers have been
used at weddings since ancient
times, the white bouquet can be.
traced to 1830 when orange• blos-

man gains at least one inch every
seventy-five years proving that
the space demands of modern
man are a far cry from those of
Medieval man.
Bigger people » need bigger
bedding. Over the past ten years, -
bedding, its length and its width
has become a source of great
concern. The proportions of
modern man have clearly
outgrown the perimeter of the
classic double bed. The need for
bigger bedding is urgent as the
burial of the double bed- is im-
minent.
Double demise
With the demise of the double
bed, queen size bedding is on the
brink of being labeled -"Stan-
dard." According to Simmons
Company makers of Beautyrest,
the measuring tape proves that in
the old double bed, each partner
had a skimpy 27" of sleeping
space , . . this is less than the
actual width of a baby's crib,
giving at best, a cramped night's
sleep.

As for other bridal white tradi-
tions, throwing white rice at the
newlyweds symbolized wealth
and • health. In the Orient, it
means, ' "may you have a full
pantry:" But in ancient times,
rice was thrown• as food for jea-
lous evil pirits who hovered near
the bride and groom.
The white wedding cake dates
to ancient Rome, where a cake
made of'flour, salt » and water was
broken over the bride's head to
wish her fruitfulness.
Not many brides today would
like cake on their head, and
thankfully this tradition has
evolved to just eating the cake.
But modern brides still » cherish
the other white traditions, and
choose to be married in white and
wear the» lovely white diamond
throughout life. '

Long Live the King! The king size bed, that is. With the demise

queen size bedding is on its way to being labeled "Standard".
The queen, however, 'measur-

Gleaming silver pi»eces
beautiful and practical
Newlyweds in the earliest days
of civilization used silver uten-
sils. These were crude articles, to
be sure, nothing like the gleam-,
ing silver pieces ' given brides
today. -
But it was the beginning of a
tradition; nothing comparesto
beautiful silver as the perfect
wedding gift.
Althotigh sterling silver is the
standard of solid silver and is the
finest you can give, silver need
not be sterling to be treasured.A
good -quality, well-designed piece
of silver plate can be an elegant
gift as well.
Sterling silver came first in
history. The term comes from the
word "Easterlings," merchant,
traders who came to England
during the 13th century. They
paid for goods with very fine
silver, a standard which England
later adopted and today is
recognized throughout the world.
Sterling is an alloy of 925 parts
silver and 75 parts copper. Ab-
solutely pure silver is too soft to
be durable.
Silver plate, on the other hand,
became popular in the early
1700s. It is basic white metal
which has been coated or
"plated" with silver. The heavier
the plating of pure silver, the bet-
ter the quality of silver plate.
When the bride of any century
or any year receives silver, her
first thought of joy is often fol-
l9wed by visions of the hard work
of cleaning and polishing. Cer-
tainly those first rough silver
pieces, as well as the finest silver
today, tarnished, because tarnish
collects from the air itself.
Today's bride, however,
doesn't need to worry about
polishing chores, because
modern formulas not only clean
silver quickly, but keep silver
tarnish free for many weeks at a
time.
Two products that make silver
cleaning a breeze come from
Hagerty, makers of fine silver
polishes for nearly 80 years.
Silver -smiths' Spray Polish
comes in an aerosol can, making
it easy to apply. Then a quick
buffing to a lustrous shine, and
the silver is ready for eVeryday
use,
From then on the bride will
merely "dust" her silver. with
Silver -smiths' Gloves. Each
time, the tarnish -preventing ac-
tion of the spray polish is re-
newed.
So go ahead and choose the
traditional wedding gift of silver,
and for just a little extra you can
give the bride carefree silver
care as well.
Pitch right in
Silver pitchers need not be
reserved for elegant dinners.
They're just as at home serving
lemonade for two on a hot
summer day. And try filling a
tankard with bread -sticks for a
perfect accompaniment to a
spaghetti dinner.
Whether your °holloware is
silverplated or stainless, it will
remain beautiful and practical
for years to come. But, with a
little help from your imagination,
you can enjoy it now, at the' very
beginning of your married life.
