With Adrian Vos
Huron County pork producera
and indeed all of Huron County
can be proud 'of Ontario's Pork
Hostess, our own, Ni4li MissAdriana
VanRaay. I had the privilege of
watching her with several ,hun-
dred more of my peers, when she
stood before. a large audience and
delivered her address about the
role of the: Pork Hostess.
She received a standing ova-
tion, at least as large as Federal
Agricultural Minister Whelan
got, and when he said later that in
his view she is a queen even if her
title is not, it was as if the au-
dience said: `Amen,"
We can only hope that this year
enough girls between the ages of
18 and 25 will compete for this
honour, so that we can come up
from Huron County with another
girl of her calibre. Remember
you non-farm girls, you ,can com-
pete too, as long as you know
about pork nutrition and recipes.

On the cover of our. working
papers at the Pork Producers'
convention was a picture of two
porkers. The one was dated 1973
with a price tag of $73, accom-
panied by a prosperous looking
farmer. The second was dated
1974 with the same $73 price tag;
The companion however was
dressed in rags. This very well
demonstrated the difference in
input prices the farmer has to
shell out.
Now the pork producer's
income is doubly jeopardized,
because not only the inputs went
up, but the outputs went down in
price. We remain hopeful that 'it
will turn for the better though.
If people ever eat the Canadian
Redcoat dinner that was served
to us on the first day, we know
that they will return to this fare
time and time again. It's gourmet
stuff. It's better than any meat'
that I've ever tasted before. It's
better than just finger -licking
good. If I do sound euphorious,
just try it sometime.

To stay with ..pork, I may as
well mention the Ontario Pork
Congress coming up in Stratford
on June 19, 20 and 2L Every day
.from 10 a.m. till 3 p.m. is a
consumer program with all sorts
of goodies. In the restaurants
those days will be featured the
aforementioned Canadian Red-
coat. Mmmmmm . That alone
is worth the trouble to rent a bus
and go with the wholeclub.

LONG BEFORE TRAFALGAR and Lady. Ham ilton, this section of the eastern Caribbean
island of Antigua was home to Britain's naval hero, Admiral Lord Nelson. The top of these
two photos shows the ruins of British army barracks on Shirley Heights which overlooks
English Harbor and Nelson's Dockyard, pictured below. It was while he was stationed \
here as a young captain that Nelson met, and in 1787 married Frances Nisbet, a widow
from the nearby island of Nevis.`TOday, this area is Antigua's top touris,t attraction—after
its scores of white sand beaches. Nelson's dockyard, now a marina and museum, was re-
stored with the help of donations from interested Canadians, Americans and Britons.

Down in Simcoe, Ontario, an
officer for 'the Humane Society
went to the home of an old couple
and" removed 41 dogs and tiro
cats. According to the press dis-
patch, ,there were other dogs ,oUt-
side in a barn and these too were
taken away. The papers than
haVe seen carried very little in-
forniation about the particulars
of this seizure. There is no
indication 'whether or not this old
couple were in the businesi of
raising dogs, in which case the
number of animals would have a
perfectly logical explanation;
and we aren't told whether or not
any municipal bylaw was violat-
ed. Furthermore, so far as can
discover, the Society found no
cruelty to these dogs' Other than
the fact that "all were suffering
froM mange and internal para -
It is to be hoped that the officer
found some more serious reason
than these for making his seizure.
After all, all dogs have worms at
some time or other. Most of them
carry a few around for company
all of the time. And a scratching
dog isn't exactly cause for court
action either. The full name of the
Humane Society is the Society for
the Prevention of Cruelty to
Animals, and as a farmer I have
often had cause to' wonder just
how well it is living up to that
name. A couple of years ago my
neighbor was visited by two
officers from the Society and told
that he would have to get his
sheep sheared right away. (It
was June, and being a busy man,
my neighbor just hadn't got
around to it, and some gentle
do-gooder had reported that the
sheep were thereby being sub-
jected to cruelty.)
Apparently the Society wasn't
satisfied with the fact that the
Good Shepherd Himself would, in
due time, see to it that the sheep
got rid of their winter underwear
by shedding.
I once had a call from the
Humane Society myself because
they had heard that was keepitiV
my cattle outside all winter long.
When I explained that my cattle
were Galloways, with coats on
tnem like bears, and that they
had a shed they could go into if
and when theY wanted, they de-
cided to give me the benefit of the
doubt and bothered me no more
on the subject. That was twenty
odd years ago and now all of the
beef men in my part of the
country do the same simply be-
cause the cattle are better for it.
Now don't get me wrong about
this. I know that we have need for
a Humane Society and we always
will just so long as we have brutal
and selfish men in the human
race. But it does seem to me that
far too often the Society over-
looks the really big cruelties that
are constantly being dealt to our
animals. I go to the big horse
shows whenever I can., and I still
see as many steeds with
butchered tails as there ever
were. As a matter of fact two
re
years ago when I 'showed a big
Percheron mare in the heavy
draft class at an eastern show the
judge alted me bluntly, as he
placed me at the end of the line,
"But you don't even have her tail
t.# 'Ott '1114 Hurnaiie
Society is very well aware of the
fact that docking a horse's tail is
usuall,y, extremely cruel: if done
withiiiit an anaesthetic would
probably cause as much pain as
the amputation of a man's hand:
that bleeding after the operation
is often 'arrested by searing the
wound with a red hot iron. And
even if a tail were guillotined in
the most humane way possible,
the animal is still left at the
mercy of summer flies. „
. Where, I ask, is the Humane
'Society when these mutilated
horses are trotted into the ring at
the Royal Winter Fair and else-
where? And why don't they have
something to say to the horsey set
whieh still follows the tradition of
'breaking' a tail, or of cutting the
muscles on the under side of it so
that it will stick. up into the air
like a flag? And why doesn't the
Society have something to •say
about the cute little practice of
squirting a little ginger into a
horse's rectum before he goes
into the show ring just to smarten
him up?
Why is the Humane Society so
quiet about the whipping which
goes on in every race at every
track in the land? After all, a
horse race would be just as
thrilling and just as fair if the
whip were banned entirely.
I say let the Humane Society
clean up the cruelties which have
so long been fashionable with the
horsey set - the bridle rich I call
them - and then, if they still have
the time and energy, start worry-
ing about whether a man has too
many dogs on the place. Or
whether said dogs are afflicted
with the mange and stomach

Do you know how to treat an
enemy ? Actually, have you
ever learned how to get rid of
an enemy, really to get back
at him?
The best of all ways is to
turn that enemy into a friend.
And it is so easily done. Just
love him or her.
You may think that is im-
possible. But not so. Try it. It
works.
"But I say unto you, LoVe
your enemies, bless them that
curse you, do good to them
that hate you, and pray for
them which despitefully use
you, and persecute you."
