Resources begins woodlot marking program The Ministry of Natural Re- sources branch in the Wingham area is getting ready to begin its woodlot marking program. The service is -provided free of charge and is an extension of the Woodlot Improvement Program. A Ministry spokesman, Murray Hall, said at air owner's request, Ministry employees will mark trees that are mature enough for cutting, give the owner an ap- praisal of what the timber is worth and then the Ministry will advertise the timber for the owner by issuing a timber sales notice to loggers. Mr. Hall said the Ministry hak; tmdertaken this project because all too often woodlots are overcut and can't be re -cut for between 50 to 100 years. By using the service an owner should be able to har- vest every 15 or 20, years. Last year the Ministry managed to sell one million board feet of lumber from 500 acres of woodlots. Mr. Hall also mentioned some of the details of the Woodlot Im- provement Act. Under this act the Ministry will plant hardwood trees for one cent each on land parcels of 10 acres and up. The owner in this case enters a 15 year agreement under which he agrees to maintain the planting area. The Ministry, as well as planting the Trees, will clear younger. wpodl t of undesirable trees such as ironwoods, defec- tive beech or crowded maples. The Wingham area Natural Resources branch services the counties of Huron and Perth as well as the southern four town- ships in Bruce County and Minto Township in Wellington County. Queen's Park A Government bill to force the teacher ratio can be arbitrated, might be", resumption of regular classes in York County received approval in the second reading and third reading stages this week and will become law immediately. The Bill establishes a three member arbitration board to break the deadlock between the teachers and the Board of Education in York County. Education Minister Thomas Wells reiterated his willingness to abandon the Bill at any time he is advised the teachers and trustees have agreed to submit to voluntary binding arbitration or reach a negotiated settlement. Liberal Leader Robert Nixon said the .Bill would not have been necessary if Mr. Wells had step- ped in a month ago and imposed` trusteeship on the Board. The Board has incited many in - 'stances of provocation in the past number of weeks. Mr. Nixon said Bill 12 which states that the pupil - means that conditions of work must be negotiated across the province in the future. The 'OntaSrio Government is spending $500,000 to tell tax- payers it wants them to get back $300 million on their income taxes this year with its Fair Share Pro- gram. The program includes rental rebates, a return of one per cent of personal exemptions as a sales tax rebate and $100 credit to pensioners. Ontario is willing to see the.. price of, Western Canadiancrude oil, rise to $6 a barrel, but only if it is going, to stay there for at least two years. Energy Minister Darcy McKeough said he 'does not want a price rise on April. lst, the date • the current Federal freeze is scheduled to expire, to be just the first step up the ladder to $7, then $8, "and on up to what- ever the world monopoly price , The Federal Government has frozen the price of Western crude at $4 a barrel until March 31st. Mr. McKeough . strongly at- tacked the desire 'of the produc- ing Provinces, Alberta and Saskatchewan, to raise the price to the world level of about $10.50 a, barrels The Energy Minister said an increase to $6 a barrel would add approximately six cents a gallon to the cost of heating oil and' gasoline in Ontario.. A jump, to $10.50 a barrel would add al- most 20 cents a gallon. This "flies in the face of the national in- terest" he said. The net impact on Ontario of a move to $6 crude would be to add costs of $350 million a year to people of the Province. Alberta's net benefit would be $750 million. • Mi Alex Fly and, visited Friday with Mr. end Mts. Ebner Greenle y. Mr. and Mrs. Eno*.
