"The Excorcist", though mak-
ing a fine showing, has not
walked off with all the honors in
the race for the Academy
Awards, as many thought it
would. At ten - nominations,. it
shares honors with "The Sting"
which also received ten nomina-
tions.
Both these pictures were nom-
inated for best picture, as was the
George Segal --Glenda Jackson
eonnedy, "A Touch of Class"; the
drama, "Cries and Whispers";
and„the musical which took us
back to the 50s and Eos, "Ameri-
can Graffiti".
Best actress nominations went
to Ellen Burstyn from "The
Exorcist"; Miss Jackson in
"Touch of ,Glass"; .Barbara
Streisand in "The Way we
Were"; Joanne Woodward in
"Summer Wishes, Winter
Dreams" and newcomer Marsha
Mason who played the prostitute
in "Cinderella Liberty". Wood-'
ward and Jackson always come
up with great performances and
each has an Oscar on her mantel-
piece now. Streisand, of course,
has also won an Oscar, for her
role in "Funny Girl". Burstyn
was nominated in a supporting
category when a few years ago
she gave a top performance in
"The Last Picture Show". She
was defeated by her close friend,
Clods Leachman, who played in
the same picture.
Best actor nominations went to
Robert Redford in "The Sting";
Al Pacino who played detective
"Serpico" ; Jack Nicholson in
"The Last Detail"; Jack Lem -
Mon in "Save. the Tiger"- and
(save us all!) Marion Brando in
"last Tango in Paris", which
proves that if the right people
think you're great, you can get
away with murder!
Among those nominated in
supporting roles were tennager
Linda Blair from "The Excor-
cist''; Ryan O'Neal's little girl,
Tatum, who stole the show from
her -dad in "Paper Moon"; young
Candy Clark from "American
Graffiti"; Madeline Kahn from
"Paper MoOn" and Sylvia Syd-
ney from "Summer' Wishes,
Winter Dreams".
Jack Gilford in "Save the Tig-
er" and Jason Miller from "The
Exorcist" are among those nom-
inated in the best actor category.
The. Oscars will be awarded
during a special telecast April 2,
And just for kicks, I'd like to
guess on a few winners. I say
`guess' because I have not seen
the much -publicized "Exorcist"
but knowing the subject matter
and how terribly involving it can
be, not to mention terrifying, I
must give credit to Burstyn and
Blair for selling their performan-
ces and making this story the
stark realism it seems to be,
without, in the process, lasing
their sanity. On the basis of per-
formances alone, it may rate the
'best movie' Oscar.
All the way, for me, it has got to
be Jack Lemmon for the best ac-
tor award. That guy is such a
fabulous performer; and doesn't
get nearly the recognition he de-
serves. If Brando wins again, I
will never look at another movie
as long as I live!! !
It will be an interesting fight.
The performers are fairly well-
known and a great deal of public-
ity has followed the release \of
several of the movies. A capital
E, for Excitement or Excorcist,
my bet it will reign in Hollywood
on the evening of April 2! •
