Ironmen down Arthur in rough encounter
The biggest crowd of the season
was on hand to witness the rough-
est game of the season as the,
Ironmen downed Arthur 9 to 2 in
the first game of the best of seven
group finals.
With the drop of the first puck
one could sense that this was go-
ing to be a hard hitting Series and
this first game had hitting galore
and a steady parade to the
penalty box.
With a rnan,short, the•Ironmer)
hit the score sheet at 2:56. It was
a fan appealing effort as Barry
O'Kraftka picked up the puck in
the corner of the Arthur end -and
with a dipsy-doodle figure eight,
seemed to mesmerize three
Arthur players who attempted to
take a shot at him. A quick pass
to Phil Paquette, alone just off
the crease, and the Ironmen were
one up. •
A power play goal at 6:56by
Russel Jones put the Ironmen
ahead by two and Dotig Leitch's
unassisted goal at 16:37 gave the
Ironmen a three goal lead after 20`
minutes of rather rough, chippy
. hockey.

Arthur came out in the second,

back in the game. With the Ar-

throttle, the Ironmen were put to
the test at the 5 minute mark
when Cliff Hetherington was fol-
lowed to the penalty lex by Barry
MacDonald. Now the Ironmen
were two men short, a quick
glance to the broadcast booth
caught Manager Doug Skinn with
his hands. clasped in either
prayer or nail chewing. The
penalty killing crew came
through with flying colors and
rather frustrated every effort

' The third period saw the Iron -
men pick up two quick goals as
Bob Johnston deflected a shot by
Steve Ste. Marie into the corner
of the net at 3:24 and Doug Leitch
denting the twine' at 3:59. From
this point on its was chippy,
checking and a steady parade to
the penalty box with no less than
32 minutes of penalties metered
otit.
Tension mounted ante one could
sense fireworks in the air and the
spark' that ignited the fistcuffs
happened at 13:08 as Arthur's.

hockey, more concerned with
coming out of the game without
injuries.
The final goal of the game was
scored by Arthur's Dave Draper
and the Arthur team and their
large following,of fans were sent
home smarting from the sound
trouncing handed them by the
Ironmen in this first game of the
group finals.
WHISTLE STOPS ... Gee, it's
been a long time since such a
good crowd has been seen in the
Wingham arena. And for those
who came to see rough, hard hit-
ting hockey they sure saw lots of
it in this one ..: And, its been a
long time since the local ,police
have been called to keep things
under control in the penalty. box
area as in this one . . For a
period and a half Arthur skated
with the Ironmen, and in fact,
would say they out -hit the Iron -
men in the first half of the game
.. Without a doubt the hardest hit
of the game was dished out by
Cliff Hetherington with Arthur's
Lee Rodgers hitting the ice to the
sudden twinkling of a universe of
stars, and as he picked himself up
On his rubbery legs, and with a
,couple of slow motion figure
skating figures groped his way
back •to the bench in a fog, you
knew that his thoughts 'were
"what hit me!" . It has often
been said "good referees will call
the game without anyone noticing
them" but in this one the referees
put on a show of their own, much
to the displeasure of both Arthur
and Ironmen fans . . . Doug
Leitch led the Ironmen with the
hat trick. Did you notice every -
time Doug scored he displayed
the new version of the Derek
Sanderson Goal Dance? .. .

game with the third game of the
series t .hack at the Wingham
