Though I would not go quite so far as to say that, I will say it provided much food for thought, a good deal of rough-housing and some fine drama. It is the story of an ex -wrestler who, with his family, settle down in his old hometown after many years of being away. His mother warns him the town has 'chang- ed', though the changes, she says, .,'don't affect us'. It is, again, 'the story of people who play ostrich and keep their heads buried so they can't see the degrading things that take place around them. In a beautiful setting by a fish pond, the young man and his family settle down. They would live happily ever after, except that the man cannot ignore the corruption of the town and the men who run it. Even the deputy sheriff whom he once admired ( "I thought you walked tall", he says to him 1 has fallen to the prey of the human vultures. It costs him plenty, but he sticks to his guns and cleans up the town. It gives you a feeling of pride that pea le like this still do exist, but iE '"makes you feel ashamed, too, for the times you have stood by and watched man's inhumanity to man and done nothing about it. What a good feeling it must be to "Walk Tall" and know you can face that per- son in the mirror and respect him. Fine dramatic efforts came from the cast, mainly unknowns. The lead role was played by Joe Don Baker, a natural in the part. His wife: Elizabeth Hartman, made a big hit ai few years ago when 'she played the blind girl in "Patch. of Blue" but since, then, by Vonni Lee As the 'host°of CBC -TV's new ombudsman series,. Elvis is riot selling as many records but he is demand ' ing a tremendous, sum ,in clubs and movies, still a most popular lad. Bad publicity and reckless living broke up the Beatles, as a group they are kaput, but singly, they still write some fine music. Pat Boone has added his wife and five daughters to his act; much of their work now consists of university concerts and relig- ---- • ious functions. He got out of mov- ies, they were too risque for`hi n; but he.didn't have much to offer them either. • We are still playing records by Rick Nelson, Connie Francis and ' Ray. Charles, though certainly not as many, -.and Connie is prim- - arily. workings da uffee retired to devote <. time .to. a family, is now ,back, but mainly. doing country and western songs. Don't ask me what became of recordings by Fats -Domino and James Brown, unless that's the same Brown in country and west- ern circles. The Supremes broke up; their lead -singer, Diana Ross, is now a big' movie star, after playing Billie Holliday in her life story, in '72. she has not been heard of too much. The story was based on a true story and events in the life of a real-life Tennessee county Sher- iff° 0 0 0 - ' Remember the mid 50s when rock and roll was just coming into its own and everyone was talking about the new stars, the young teenagers who were making more money in one evening than their parents and grandparents had ever seen in a lifetime? Well, believe it or not, in a newly -rel- eased survey conducted over the past 18 years, the top selling per- formers, that is the performers whose songs were at the top of the hit parade for the longest period of time, have been named and. , every single one is a rad( and roll performer. Sinatra and all those in his category,, though they have definitely. had some hit songs, didnt make it to the top ten. Not surprisingly, Elvis was No. 1, the most popular ',recording artist of the last 18 years, way out in front of the No. 2 group, Eng- land's Beatles. No. 3 surprises me a bit; it is Pat Boone and though he was popular in the 50s, I thought his popularity had waned considerably. Rick Nelson is No. 4, then Connie Francis, Fats Domino, Ray Charles, the Supremes, James - Brown and MARTENS SPORTS CENTRE Suppliers of club lockets, tearrr uniforms, team supplies.
