Continued from page 1)
However, it will end in 1975.
A new regulation goes into ef-
fect next year, stating that only
reeves and deputy reeves with an
electorate of 2,500 will qualify for
county council and Palmerston
does not have that electorate.
Contrary to Ms. Bennett's
opinion, Ms, Logan does think we
will have a woman in the Prime
Minister's post, although she
adds, "I don't think there is . a
woman in politics who has that
much strength or power behind
her at the moment."

When asked which female poli-
tician she followed most in the
Canadian political scene, she an-
swered, "Grace Maclnnis, an
NDP member from British
Columbia." She clarified, "I am
not NDP although I have voted
that way."
As far as her favorite male
politician she says, "I don't
really follow anyone. I was quite
taken with Trudeau when he first
carne onto the scene, but I am not
quite as enthusiastic now."
The Wellington 'County Coun-
cillor has no aspirations to go
further in politics. "I don't feel
my own energies are up to it,"
she explains, adding that she can
"handle what I do now, but I don't
feet I can take on extra responsi-
bilities."
Discrimination? "I have no-
ticed that council members tend
to think that social and com-
munity affairs are a woman's
niche and I think this is very
wrong."
However, the "niche" has not
trapped Ms. Logan who is on the
streets committee in Palmerston
and says, . "I would say I have
been treated fairly here and I've
tried to change some attitudes
mainly, by just being myself."
CouncillobLogan believes she
has been treated fairly and ad-
mits she doesn't know what the
real secret is for a woman going
into politics but, `'I feel you need
to pull your own weight right
from the beginning, whether you
are a man or a woman. •
"You won't be handed things on
a silver platter. You've got to do
your very. best," but she cautions
that "if a female politician or a
woman in any job tries too hard,
she might turn people off, too."
As far as the stereotyped
woman in politics, she says,
"You're always . going to get
arrows thrown at you, so that's
too bad. You just have to develop
thick skin."
The search for a woman to take
over the position of assistant to
the Lieutenant Governor, she -
thought, `smacked of tokenism."
"I mean, why do they say they,
are looking for a woman, period?
That's discrimination in reverse
of what we usually think is dis-
crimination. They should have
been looking for .the best person
for the job and, if a woman had
the better qualifications for the
job, fine.•But, the way it was done
sounded like they were spoon=
feeding ..Canadian women and
paying lip service to the women's
lib movement. In -other 'words,
they are saying, . `Let's put a
woman in here. It' will sound good
ana look good, and'people will lap
it up.' That is tokenism."
Although she does not agree
with the women's lib movement
because they are "extremist,
naturally", she says it has made
women "more aware of the in-
justices to women that have
existed." .
Even though Ms. Logan is quite
sure that, for the majority of
women, "looking at male nudes
in female magazines is either
enjoyable or their idea of
women's lib," she does think that
the new -style magazines just
might '`help men understand why
women are offended by things
like Playboy and Penthouse."
She doesn't think male maga-
zines such .as the aforementioned
have helped women because
"they look upon women as sexual
.tl
• • . 0
objects' and women should be
thought of as more than that."
At about this point the inter-
view came to a halt. "It's almost
noon and the kids will be home for
their lunch soon," she told me.
The tone of her voice implied she
was proud to be" a mother. She
was glad the kids would be home
for lunch and I Immediately
thought of something she had
said during our conversation.
"There are some cases where
being feminine is an advantage."
WOMEN IN LOCAL
GOVERNMENT PROJECT: _.
There are more' women like
Ms. Logan, Ms. Karges, Ms..
Leiper and Ms. Bennett entering
politics and other professions_ ;
concerned women, women with a
conviction that they can make a
worthwhile contribution.
It is women like these, and
men, who are striving to balance
the government of Canada so that
it is truly' representative of allits
people, and who formed the
Women in Local Government
Project, the newest project un-
dertaken by the Ontario Con-
ference on Local Government
(OCLG) .
Officers named at the initial
steering committee meeting held
December 6 include, Her Wor-
ship, Mayor Jane Bigelow of Lon-
don, chairman; vice-chairman,
Clerk -treasurer of Wellington
County Vera B. Myers; and fi- .
nance, Reeve John Cochran of
Town of Almonte.
An outline of the project for-
warded to the Richard M. Ivey
Foundation, London, Ontario, re-
ceived favorable response and
funding in the amount of $10,000
was approved by the Foundation.
CO -ordinator of the program,
Ms. Caroline Ion, spoke at the
meeting. "As a development or
refinement of the basic OCLG
course, this study was considered
as a means of increasingthe in-
volvement of women in local gov-
ernment. and of helping to make
the contributions of those already
there more effective.
As you've already read, -none of
the women interviewed really
came out and said they have been
discriminated against by males
in the political scene.
You and I both ,know there is
bias. There is prejudice against
women by men and against men
by women . . . it exists; or we
wouldn't have women's lib. But,
in man instances the signs of
discrimination are very subtle
and petty. And so it is with all of
those who discriminate: petti-
ness.
None of our subjects named
this pettiness, because they view
it as such and they themselves
are r)ot petty. They are serious in
their political work. And through
these attitudes they are equal.
It is those who burn their bras
we've got to worry about. And
don't be surprised if some
weirdos start up a men's libera-
tion movement ! t can just see it.
A bunch of male protestors burn-
ing their jockey shorts on Par-
liament Hill!

STICKING DOOR
Dampness sometimes expands
the wood fibers of 'a door so that
it doesn't close properly. To remedy
such a situation, rust remove the
door and also its hinges. Then
plane the hinged side of the door
to the desired level, planing only a
stroke or two at a time and check-
ing the fit frequently. Be sure to
plane with -the grain of the wood.
Finally, deepen the hinge recesses
with a chisel to compensate for
the shaved -off wood, then replace
your hinges.
