For a guy who was pounding
the pavement looking for work,
about as low as he could go, not so
very long ago, Stompin' Tom
Connors has come a long way
and, like him or not, you have to
admire his spunk and be ilad that
there is a way up for guys like
him.
_ With recordings, radio and,
television guest spots behind him,
he is now moving to his first reg-
ular television series, weekly, to
be produced next season, the fall
and winter of '1974 and 1975. His
name has already been placed on
the dotted line and preparations
will be getting underway soon.
The show will be seen (in prime
time, yet ) on the full CBC Tele-
vision network and thougb it will
be produced in the CBC Edmon-
ton studios. it will include pro-
grams filmed on location and in
studios in every province in the
country. The series will include'
26 half-hour shows. 21 original
shows and five repeats.
The series will, of course, be
country-and-western in flavour.
featuring many' cif his own songs
and many new songs.he will write
especially for the show. His fam-
ous thumping -board will no doubt
be the star of the show' Special
guests. from the areas he visits.
will perform with him and Many
of the shows will utilize the nat-
ural beauty of the locale. Don
McRae will prodtke the series
and Connors will be backed by his
two regular c6horts, Bill Lewis
and Gary Empey.
Connors has been enjoying a
great deal of success in recent
months, success whicfisonly grew .
after the CBC network showed his
marriage ceremony which took
place on the Elwood Glover show,
"Luncheon Date", on November
2.' Maybe now Connors wi)l,invite
Glover to his show; since he no
doubt has a wife, perhaps he
could marry off one of his kids!
Seriously, though, it's been a
ahetthrdfvieght for Torn ; 1 hope he can
ie
the success he •craves
here' in Canada, without heading
south of the border.

We are sure -living in a sick so-
ciety when one of the most pop-
ular motion pictures of the year is
an erotic degrading piece of gar-
bage like "Last Tango in Paris".
Yet rumors are rampant in the
film capital that the picture will
certainly be nominated for an
Oscar if not be named the winner,
and its star, Marlon Brando, may
be mentioned again .,for best
actor. After being told in no un-
certain terms what. they could do
with their Oscar last year when
they awarded it to him for "The
Godfather" (a deserved one), I
can't understand why members
of the Academy would again give
him the opportunity to refusP If
an Oscar can be awarded for per-
onal reasons (Elizabeth Tay-
lor's for "Butterfield 8" and Julie
Andrews' for "Mary Poppins"
were both sympathy awards,
certainly not for acting), 'why
can't one he refused for precisely
the same reason?
We will have to wait a few more
days to find out the results of the
()scar voting. but we do already
know that Brando has been nam-
ed the most popular film actor in
the world in 1973, as he was in
1972. The 1973 vote in primarily
for his .1,T!P' since that is the
only movie he had in release dur-
ing the year. in some centres, of
course, 'Godfather' returned to
pack hOuses but basically. cur-
ious public spent money hand
over fist to see.:Paris' and earned
him this honor ('i. His counter-
part in the actress category is
Elizabeth Taylor, back again to
nthe role of film queen.
