Canada's new national network is close to three weeks old now, Global Television having been born on January 6. Originating in Toronto, Global will be seen in this area through the facilities of Channel 6, and reception should -be, fairly good if you have an out- side antenna. It does not have af- filiate stations which transit its programs, as do the other two networks, but instead has a series of transmitters at various places throughout Ontario. Programming on Global will include new, feature films, docu- mentaries, a 90 -minute weekly variety show and several im- ports, such as "Doc Elliott", "Hollywood Squares", "Doctor in the ,House" and "Upstairs, Downstairs'. Motion pictures will be featured each week night, for the viewer who likes to sit down and relax with two or three hours of non-stop entertainment. There will be many familiar faces on the new network, people like Canada's singer Catherine McKinnon, former newsman Stanley Burke, interviewer Pat- rick Watson, and former Cana- dian actor William Shatner who had a fair amount of success as a Hollywood actor and now is con- vincing people they oughta shop at Loblaw's. Of course, several international stars will appear on the network too. It would be only right to con - by Vonni Lee """'EE'.' 4, 1' Al .., "„tl lone y, yi lead row ipy ' ys. A total of $20,000, was awarded in all, and while most of it went to Toronto playwrights, a couple came fairly close to home. A Brussels man, Cedric Smith, one of. the original members of the Perth County Conspiracy, is one of the winners. He is current- ly writing music and lyrics for a play called "The Road to Char- lottetown" written by Milton Acorn. This work is currently underway in Toronto. What was our loss was Lon- don's gain. When Rick Welwood left CKNX and Wingham to be- come an instructor at Fanshaw College, we lost a fine talent that could have done much to promote the arts and particularly, live theatre, in Wingham. His award is for "One For All", a new play which has 'already been produced in London. Before Rick left Wingham, he was actively involved in The / WASHES RINSES SPIN DRIES 24 LBS. IN 30 MINS.
