THE TOP E IGT public speaking, students were chosen at
Howi'ck Central School on Tuesday, Januarry 15, Barb
Zwarick was chosenthe overall best speaker in both junior
and intermediate divisions and will go on to compete in the
Wingham Trustees' and Ratepayers' contest. The top four .
students go on to compete in the Howick Lions' Club contest.

The East Wawanosh Township
Council passed a bylaw authoriz-
ing the borrowing of. 1150,000
from the Wingham Imperial
Bank of Commerce to meet ex-
penditures of the municipality
• until taxes are collected this
year.

The council passed a motion to
pay the . Maitland Valley Con-
servation Authority for a - map-
ping of the floodplain for fill and
construction regulations. It was
also decided to giveRoss Taylor,
the township's representative on
the Authority the power to vote
for the municipality on a resolu-
tion to enlarge the area of juris-
diction of the Authority . at a
Xmeeting in Lucknow Jan. 22.

Pattison and Robert' Scott will
represent council on the Wing -
ham and. District Fire Com-
mittee, Simon Hallahan and
Robert Charter will sit on Blyth
and District Fire Committee,
Robert Charter was appointed to
the Blyth Union Cemetery, Roy
Pattison, Gerald McDowell and -
Robert Scott will serve on the
East and West Township Park
Board. Council also appointed

Hanna got a pay rise of

wages for the first road grader
,operator by 50 cents an hour to
$3.30,... the second road . grader
operator by 50 cents to $3.10; a
laborer by 30 cents an hour to
$2.50, a\landfill supervisor by 30
cents to $2.30. -
The council was informed that
96 weir'cent of the tax assessinlerit
for 1973 has been paid with 'Only
$6,000 outstanding. This is be-
lieved to be the lowest arrears

Church services were can-
celled in Bluevale on Sunday due
to the ice storm. Hydro was off in
these areas, too.
Mr. and Mrs. West Haugh and

and Mrs. Fraser Haugh and

Saturday for supper.
Visitors with Mrs. Ross Mann
