urday.'.,Mrs. Aitken was in her
914,year and death followed an
illness of .a few months.
born July 20, 1882, in Bluevale,
s. Aitken was the former
Martha Alice Duff, a daughter of
Mr., and Mrs. Robert
if► She was educated at Blue-
vs4e"Public School and Clinton
High School and attended London
Nernial School. She taught at
Corr e's School in East Wawa-
noshwand also at schools in Bar-
rier Molesworth and Bluevale,
where her stay as a teacher ex-
tended from 1919 to 1936. On her
retirement, she took up residence
in Bluevale.
a. '" Aitken was an active
mother of the Bluevale United
Chulrch and a life member of the
United Church Women. She was
also a„1valued member of the Wo-
men's' institute. She was a
talented author, contributing
regOlarly to the pages of daily
andweekly newspapers for which
she wrote several stories of
Pim life in Ontario. She was
also'thr author of "The History of
Turnberry Township” and Blue -
e
vale correspondent for weekly
• newspapers, including The yrmg-
ham Advance -Times and The
Listowel Banner. She retired
from this position last summer
after her 90th birthday.
In 1912,she married Malcolm
Louis Aitken, manager of Aitken
Flour Milling co. at Beeton. He
predeceased .her in 1915. Surviv-
ing are one daughter, Mrs. Don-
ald (Dorothy) Street of RR 3, Lis-
towel; three grandchildren, Mrs.
Stuart (Linda) McConnell and
Mrs. Gordon (Julia) Mitchell of
Listowel; Stephen Street of RR 3,
Listowel. Also surviving is one
sister, Mrs. Ross (Eva) Douglas
of Toronto. She was predeceased
.by four brothers and two sisters.
The late Mrs. Aitken rested at
the R. A. Currie and Son Funeral
Home, Wingham, until Monday
when removal was made to the
Bluevale United Church for
funeral at 1:30.(Karel deKoeijer
officiated. Interment followed in
Bluevale Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Gordon Mun-
dell, George Hetherington, Wil-
son Thornton, Carl Johnston, Bill
Peacock and Bert Garniss.
Flower bearers were Jack Elliott
of London, Colin Fingland of
Wingham and J. J. Elliott.
