Owl". Rend+arng excellent serv-
ice as junior aides and unofficial
"paci ies" are Esther Nethery,
Brenda Foxton and Cathy _Fox -
ton, who also find time to support
the Cub work.
Attending a recent meeting of
the Wingham Brownies in the
church basement after school,
The Advance -Times cameraman
was introduced to the Mysterious
ritesas obServed• by the young
uniformed Brownies.
After an initial period of games
which the girls enjoy until all are
assembled, the girls join in a big
"Fairy. Ring" around the sym-
bolic toRndstool,'throne of a not -so -
fierce looking owl. There. they
sing the Brownie song, repeat the
Lawand the Promise and the
presents its tribute of "fairy
gold". At the end of the rites, the
girls withdraw to their six
"corners" for activities of their
own little groups, engage in craft
work and prepare for badge tests,
as badges are awarded for pro-
ficiency in many areas.
Later they rejoin for a "pow
wow" in a big circle when a
general discussion period maybe
held, with perhaps sonic more
songs, concluded with prayer and
"Taps".
Mrs. Wolsey explains that
there is good value to be seen in
the potential for teaching the
girls to respect others as wen as
themselves as it instils self confi-
dence, and is especially good for
little girls who tend to be with-
drawn, undulythyor-introverted.
