ROAD TO ADVENTURE
by RAY GOLABIEWSKI
KNIGHTS OF THE AIR (Part3)
Albert Ball was only nineteen when
he came to Trance with the Royal
Flying Corps in 1916. He was an
artillery obsert•er, but managed to
shoot down three German planes.
He was then transferred to a fighter
squadron. Ball's favorite tactic as
a fighter pilot was to fly a head-on
collision course. When the enemy
veered off to avoid a crash, Ball sent
a stream of lead into the hapless
machine.
One afternoon Ball spotted two
German Albatroses and immediately
attacked. He inflicted only minor dam-
age on each, but thetwo fled for home.
Ball pursued, using up all his am-
munition. He even fired his revolver
at the two fleeing planes. The Ger-
mans landed at their base and Ball
circled overhead, He dropped a note
challenging the two to meet him over
the base the next day atthesametlme.
When he arrived over the German
field the next day the two Albatroses
were already in the alt. As soon as
Ball attacked, three other German
,bones swooped dowrt after him, He
ad flown into a trap. Ball tried his
usual ramnming tactics, but the Ger-
"It dojt,
mans kept a safe distance and waited.
Finally Ball was out of ammunition.
The five closed in for the kill, guns
blazing. Bali's Nicuport went into a
crazy spin. At the last minute it
leveled out and landed In an open
field. Two of the Germans landed in
the sante field. The other three flew
over, wagged their wings in triumph,
then flew back to the base to report
they had shot down the great Albert
Ball.
The two Germans who landed
Jumped out of their planes and ran
toward the Nieuport. 'Ball was slump-
ed forward In the cockpit, but the en-
gine was still idling. Suddenly, he
straightened up set the throttle wide
open and puller; back on the control
suck. The little plane bumped and
bounced down the field past the two
startled Germans and took off. Ball
. had done it again. QQ,uick thinking.
and daring had saved him again.
Late in the afternoon on May 7,
1917, eleven plana went ontrop
five returned. Ball was one oftthose
who did not. He had flown into a
heavy white doud and was gone.
Neither his body nor his plant writ
everfound.
