A KITCHEN DINING AREA blossoms forth in the beauty of luxurious shag carpeting
constructed of entirely man-made pile fibre and backing for easy care and maintenance.
The new shag styles are suitable for use anywhere in the home.
Carpet isn't just decoration
If a 20th century Rip Van
Winkle were to wake up to-
day, take a stroll through
town and see carpeted
supermarkets, bowling al-
leys, office buildings, new
schools, hospitals, restau-
rants, City Halls and auto -
showrooms, he might think
the whole country has gbne
soft. For Rip would remem-
•ber when carpet was a lux-
ury floor -covering, found in
the only -on -Sunday parlor at
home.
But if he took a close Idok
at some of the carpet
around, he'd quickly realize
that the compact loop pile
carpet in the new element-
ary school, the smart rub -
ter -backed quality in the
auto showroom and the
printed carpet in the restau-
rant are far cry from the
carpet of yesterday. •
Yet the notion that carpet
isa luxury lingers on, partly
because its comfort and lux-
ury contrast so dramatical-
ly with many hard -surface
floors.
Today, carpet is consider-
ed at the planning stage_ by'
the designers and architects
who specify its ute in com-
mercial or "contract" ap-
plications.
Carpet Has Many "Extras"
Architects now design
concert halls, classroom
areas and office, space on
the basis of carpet's capa-
city to soak up echoes and
distracting noises. Adminis-
trators specify carpet be-
cause of its cost-cutting,
easy -care qualities, its no -
slip safety.
And many department
stores make carpeting a
must because of- its .positive
effect on customer comfort
and on employee morale.
Supermarkets have found
that a carpeted store at-
tracts more shoppers, in-
creases sales.
And all—architects, ad-
ministrators, designers,
management and merchan-
•disers—appreciate carpet's
decorative ability, its versa-
tility and wide range of
colors and 'styles.
Soft But Sturdy
But that's not a living
room carpet you see in the.
school classroom. Rather
than a soft plush pile, it's
likely to be a ruggedly hand-
some tight-loop'tweed,' built
to endure classroom traffic,
to clean easily' ,and stay
fresh -looking despite ,!hun-
dreds of students.
• Injuries Reduced
It may not have the deep
plush feel to the. hand but
students sit on if in comfort.
While the • sFhool saves

ance, falls and injuries are
reduced as well. 'Incidental-

Engineered Carpets
Actually, carpets for con-
tract or commercial use of
them a1ng i neered to
meet very specific require-
ments. The fibre, pile
height, weight, weave,
backing and under cushion
are all co-ordinated to ob-
tain a specific result acous-
tically, decoratively, tac-
tilely (how does it feel to the
foot) and for easy mainten-
ance.
Contract type carpet gen-
erally is not used for private
residential applications.
Patterns are often inappro-
priate for reasons of size.,
As well, colorings may be
more uti l itaria-n to mask soil
and keep cleaning, costs
down. Nevertheless, some
contract carpets can and
are used in private homes
where very special require-
ments call for a heavy traf-
fic floor covering.
Many Reasons
Overall, the practical rea-
sons that persuade experts
with their slide rules to
choose carpet for hotels,
hospitals, theatres and
stores apply equally to your
home: You want—as well as
beauty—safety and comfort
underfoot, reduced noise
levels, easy -care of your
floors.
What Next?
Belieye it or not, a new
manufacturing process, now
under development, is pro-
ducing test carpet, tiles by
freezing the fibre; Called
','Thermo Weave", the pro-
cess consists • of feeding a
loose, u.ntwi4ted rope. of
''Protel polypropylene
through a pattern guide sys-
tem and into a freezing unit.
The fibre is frozen solid
and forms an ingot or block.
Then, depending upon the
thickness of the tile re-
quired,, slices of the frozen.

New carpet at home?
Looks nice, doesn't it? The
nicest part is that a simple
program of care will keep it
looking that way for a long,
long time.
Naturally, you'll want to
remove spills as soon as
they happen so that your
carpet won't be permanent-
ly stained. And a daily rou-
tine of picking up lint and
surface dirt with a light
sweeping or vacuuming is
almost automatic for most
women.
Weekly Vacuuming
But, one of the most im-
portant activities to under-
take on a regular basis is a
weekly vacuuming. What
type of vacuuming—and
vacuum cleaner—depends
on the type of carpeting you
have -a felt -like carpet with
fibres lieing flat; a tufted or
woven carpet with upright
fibres; or one with extra
long pile yarns such as a
shag. Each requires slightly
different care.
Fibres Lieing Flat
For a carpet with fibres
lieing flat, a thorough week-
-
iy vacuuming is needed us-
ing a vacuum cleaner that
has a brush and beater bar.
Canister -type vacuums can
be used, however-,-- if extra
care is taken to do a good
vacuuming job.
Carpets with Upright Yarns
Plush, twist, loop -pile car-
pets should be vacuumed
each week with a vacuum
with brush and beater bar.
(A canister vacuum will not
do a satisfactory job, be-
causeit cannot agitate the
pile to shake out abrasive
dirt particles buried below
the surface.) -
Move the vacuum slowly
to give the dirt time to be
shaken up by the vacuum
suction. If your vacuum has
a height adjustment (to al-
low.'for ,different carpet pile
heights), set the dial until
you can feel a slight resist-
ance to pushing.and pulling
the vacuum.
Long Pile Yarns
Suction only is recom-
mended for shag carpets:
Ari upright vacuum with a
beater bar can be used if the
drive belt to the beater is
disconnected while cleaning
the carpet. Or, use the at-
tachment hose instead of the
vacuum head.' This is to
avoid fraying the yarns with
too much beating that could
cause themto bloom out and
lose the shag appearance.
Frozen Carpets!
loaf .of frozen bread.
These slices are then fed
into a drying oven and' ad-
hered
dhered to a molten solution of
a backing material. The re-
sult is a patterned. carpet
tile ,in which the individual
fibres of polypropylene re
literally locked into he
backing.
The tiles look good, ha e a
highly concentrated a unt
of fibre packed toget r to
form a dense pile con truc-
tion. And, best of all, the
manufacturing process is
relatively simple.
• You could call them "real
cool"- carpet tiles.
MORE AND MORE housewives are singing the praises of
kitchen carpet. Easy care, reduced slippage and less noise•
are among the key features of carpet in the kitchen.
Seasonal Care
After a certain period of
time, even with regular
vacuuming, the appearance
of your carpet may be dulled
by an accumulation of soil,
oils, dust, dirt, pollution
from the air --which is not
readily removed. This effect
will be more apparent in
some areas than others and
with delicate colors which
may be masked or changed
in hue by the accumulation
of oil and very fine dirt par-
ticles.
You can often improve the
appearance of a carpet by
using home cleaning
methods. These are not a
substitute for a thorough
professional cleaning but
they do brighten the carpet
surface.
Three Types
There are three types of
home cleaning:
1. The dry method, using
an absorbent powder -type
cleaner.
2. The wet method, using a
water and detergent solu-
tion.
-3. Foam spray.
The Dry Method
There are a ' number of
powder -type cleaners avail-
able for surface brightening
of carpets in the home.
Manufacturer's directions
for using these materials
should be followed care-
fully. Although this method
will not clean the carpet as.
completely as the wet
method, it does have the ad-
vantage of less texture dis-
tortion, better removal of
greasy soil, no color bleed-
ing and less drying time.
The Canadian Carpet In-
stitute recommends this
method for most home-
makers.
The Wet Method
rt is advisable to remove
furniture from the room
when using this method of
cleaning. If it is impractical
to do so, thick plastic film°or
aluminum • foil should be
placed under the legs of fur-
• niture until the carpet is dry
to prevent rust or other
stains.
Wet cleaning is suitable
for all types of carpet but re -
soiling problems can occur
and most homemakers
should followdirections ex-
plicitly or consult a profes-
sional cleaner for advice be-
fore using this method.
Foam Spray Method
A relatively new method
now available for home
cleaning of carpets is the
foam spray. First you spray
a thin layer of foam on the
carpet, sponge in and then
vacuum when dry. This is
done working in small areas
until the entire carpet has
been cleaned.
There is a certain danger
that a streaky appearance
will result'when this method
is applied without proper
care or if it is used to clean a
heavily soiled carpet.
In all of these home clean-
ing methods, the Canadian
Carpet Institute advises that
you strictly follow 'the in-
structions on the label of the
,cleaner used. Should prob-
lems occur, check with a
professional carpet cleaner
for advice.
Professional Cleaning
For a very thorough
cleaning, about every 1-2
years, look to the services of
a reliable .carpet and rug
cleaning firm. They will
have the experience and
equipment to do the job.
Depending upon your type
of carpet installation and
other factors, your carpet
can be cleaned either in
yourhome or in the clean-
er's plant. This last method
is the most effective but it
a
uttif are
isa.'t always practical of
course, (The one exception
is wail -to -wall jute backed
carpet which should ` be
cleaned in the home to avoid
shrinkage).
Regular Loving Care
New carpet at home? Re-
member ---light daily care;
regular weekly vacuuming;
seasonal cleaning; profes-
sional cleaning every 1-2
years. That's it --►the simple,
easy program that will keep
that carpet looking beautiful
for a long, long time.
