THIS NURSERY HAS TAKEN on a whole new feeling of, warmth and comfort with -the addition of carpeting on both
floors and a unique bench -wall area.
Which Type of Color
There's no black magic or
hocus pocus about the use of '
color. Once you learn a few
simple color facts, you can
.put• this valuable tool to
work creating the well,
decorated home you've al-
ways dreamed of.
Color ,hits your eye the
minute you.enter.a room. So
take advantage of that fact
and beautify the big. areas—
such as carting—with
aicolors that ,express you -.and
' your tastes.
And you're bound to come
out a winner if you know
y.o`ur color-wh ' 'basics.
They're easy to learn.
The Color Wheel
The color wheel is based
on three primary colors:
red, yellow and blue.
Secondary colors arecreat-
ed by mixing equal amounts
of the two primary colors.
The secondary colors in-
clude orange (a combina-
tion of red and yel lbw) ;
green (composed of yellow
and blue); and violet (a
mixture of blue and red).
Interriediate colors are pro-
duced by mixing each prim-
ary color, with its.secondarv-
color neighbor. There are
six of these: yellow-orange,
yellow -green, red -orange,
red -viol t, blue -violet, and
blue -gr =en.
Split the color wheel ver-
ticall r down the centre and
you •separate warm from
coy I / olors. The "warms"
ar- ed, orange and. yellow.
They're friendly, happy
stimulating colors that en-
hance rooms with northern
or eastern exposures . . a
room .that gets little sun-
light.
"Cool" colors—blue,
green, violet—are more
quiet and soothing. They're
good in dining rooms, bed-
rooms or dens ... can sug-
gest space and make a small
room seem larger.
Learning the color wheel
is like learning the alphabet
before you start to write.
Here are some of the ABC's.
Hue means the same as
color..Value is the darkness
or lightness of the color. In-
tensity is the brightness or
dullness of color. Shades are
hues to which black is add-
ed; tints are hues with the
addition of white.
•Five Steps
Color certainly is your key
to good decorating. Here are
five steps that can make
your color scheming almost
fool -proof.
1. Choose Few Colors—Too
many cooks spoil the broth
and too many colors spoil a
scheme. The best color
schemes are based on a few
well-chosen colors so don't
use ail your favorites in the
same room.
2. One Major Color -^-You
94nowwhailltrppen5 with too
many bosses and too few
workers. It's the same with-
-Your color scheming. Pick
out one predominant color
and use several supporting
colors to round out the
scheme.
3. Use Black and White—
The colors you use will look
even more colorful if you
sprinkle`° them with some
highlights and shadows.
Think of salt and pepper on
,food lacJs, and white ..give_
the same _Lift to your colors.
4. Offset Large Areas with
Small Accents—Imagine
how dull your own , figure
would be if all your
measurements were the
same. Don't let your color
proportions get monotonous,.
either. Use color ' big—but
remember to use it small
too.
5. Repeat Colors .Any hue
good enoughto be seen once
should be repeated—par-
tinularly the vivid,.locked-in
colors of today's carpets.
The Big Three
As you can see, colors can.
be combined in many ways
but the most reliable—and
successful—schemes are
the "big three". Teich
nically they're known as
monochromatic, related and
complementary. A mono-
chromatic or single -color
scheme uses various tints,
shades and intensities of one
color for a very serene ef-
fect. The related or side-by-
side scheme is also restful.
It combines neighboring ..
Colors of -the color wheel.
The complementary is the
liveliest scheme, playing
opposite colors against one
another.
1. Single Color Scheme—
Have a favorite color? Then
-spotlight it in a single -color
scheme. For instance, green
ranging from yellow -green
to blue-green and back.
Though you're using only
one basic color, there's
nothing monotonous about
this kind of color scheme
The secret is to create
variations on` the one -color
theme by shading the color
with- black, tinting it. with

white, or mixing it with the
colors That lie next to it on
the color wheel. Accents
should be very subtle.
2. Related Color Scheme—A
related or side-by-side color
scheme uses adjacent colors
on the color wheel. An ex-
ample would be a scheme
revolving .around yellows
and oranges—from crisp
lemon yellow to, deep burn-
ished red -orange tones. To
create this interesting effect
in your home,.use some hues
in large areas, others- in
smaller proportions. High-
light your room with a few
shrewd.touches of black and
white for accents.
3: Complementary Color
Scheme—Draw a straight
line across the color wheel
Best?
You'll connect two opposite
color's and launch a scheme -
that's electrifying—green
Ind red, perhaps blue and
orange For total drama,
limit yourself to just the two
opposite colors of .add their
lighter or darer values, •
plus neutrals, to enhance
them all the more.
One final word before you .
start. You may think you
can carry a color scheme or
a color, Ail youmhead.: Don't
try because different illu-
mination, surroundings and.
other factors can make any
color look different.' So, try
to select your colors—par- '
ticularly for carpet and up-
holstery -in your home
where they'll be used. It'
your decision and you wan
it to be right.
