NOVELTY SIGNS

Many makers of scatter

claim "Stop", "Go", "One

... a smart investment un-
derfoot.
Carpet at stair edges al-
ways .receives the heaviest
wear. To lengthen the life of
your stair carpet, have it
laid with an extra length
folded under at the top riser.
This allows a simple shift
downwards to distribute
wear evenly'. This shifting
can be repeated several
times before the wear be-
comes noticeable. Include
extra underlay -too' for
-longer wear.
DO YOU REMEMBER WHIN...?
Mother hung the carpet over the clothesline; then she beat the carpet
and all the imbedded grit fell to the ground. Maybe you pitched in by sweep-
ing the carpet to remove the unsightly tread and pet hair. Then a big gust of
wind blew away the dust. You knew that Mother's carpet was really clean, and
those carpetsseemed like they .would never wear out.
Well nothing has changed ... The HOOVER . UPRIGHT VACUUM CLEANER
will keep your carpets looking new years longer because -- like in Mother's
day the HOOVER beats . as it sweeps ... as it cleans to remove all the dirt.

When Carpet
Consider the Cushion. Too
When shopping for your
new carpet or rug be sure
undercushion is also a very
important part of the pur-
chase. Don't skimp or try to
cut cost corners. t
For, in addition to provid-
ing extra comfort and quiet,
the right cushion helps to
extend carpet life by acting
as a shock absorber and in-
suring a smooth, even base
for the carpet and rug. It
will also help air circulation
through the carpet, making
it easier to clean.
According to the National
Bureau of Standards in the
United States! e'"sts they
have -conducted indicate
that proper carpet cushion
definitely prolongs the life of
carpeting and helps it retain
surface texture ,at least 50
per cent longer.
Three Basic Types
You'll discover there are
three basic types of carpet
cushion to choose from:
felted made of hair or a
combination of hair and
jute; rubber in the form of
flat or rippled sponge .or re-
inforced foam; and polyure-
thane cushion in several
forms.
All types of carpet cushion
are made in various weights
and thicknesses suitable for
various end uses. The felted
cushions are measured in
ounces per square yard; the
rubber and polyurethane
types are measured by
weight and -or thickness.
For example, a 40 oz. felted
cushion or a 64 oz. sponge
rubber cushion is suitable
for average home use. Car-
pet in a heavy traffic com-
mercial area might be' in-
stalled over a 50 oz. felt or 2 -
inch flat heavy duty rubber.
The Right Way
The best way to choose
carpet cushion is to consider
it in relation to the carpet.
Never try to compensate for
a skimpy carpet with a thick
cushion. Conversely, don't
expect .a flimsy cushion to
do the job under a thick
luxurious carpet. The
cushion should be firm
enough to support the carpet
properly.
Ask the Dealer
Ask the advice of your
dealer when selecting cush-
ion and try ° a simple step
test. Place a .sample of the
carpet and cushion on the
floor and step on them. You
can quickly determine
whether you prefer .a.
"bouncy" feeling, a firmer
step .or something in be-
tween. (You may want the
firmer step -in the kitchen
where you do a lot of walk-
ing and a softer, more
luxurious feeling in the liv-
ing room).
When considered in, rela-
tion to your total purchase,
the cost of carpet cushion is
nominal—ranging from Ies
than $1 per square yard for
lightweight cushion for
budget installations °up to
about $3—$4 a yard for the
finest, most luxurious cush-
ions.
Things to Consider
The heaviest, lushest,
softest carpet cushion is not
necessarily the best or most
suitable for a specific in-
stallation. On a stairway,
for example, while a good
grade is essential because of
extra traffic and .wear,it is
Some Tips ,for Gleaning
Small Rugs
and Bathmats
Bath mats and area rugs
Up to 4' x 6' can be cleaned in
your washing machine, ex-
cept for those which have
been cut: from a iarger rug
and have a jute backing.
The secret of restoring new.
beauty to small rugs is to
wash them in neutral or
milddetergent and then
tumble dry. If tumbling ac-
tion is notavailable, hang or
spread rugs in the shade
until they are dry. Then
brush them Lightly with . a
stiff brush. Forced air from
a vacuum or fan is also help-
ful.
Because dyes and 'colors
in floor -coverings, as in,all
types of furnishings mate-
rial, have a tendency to
bleed, classify colors before
placing rugs in the washing
machine. White and very
light colors may be washed
together while dark colors
should be uvashed separate-
ly.
Area rugs are for everywhere
When you're considering
carpet, don't forget to in-
vestigate area rugs. In re-
cent years, they've become
more and more popular and
are now available in 'a
decorator's dream of colors,
textures and sizes. From a
small bathroom mat to a
luxurious 9' x 12' rug—even
bigger if you want—there's
sure to be one that's just
right for your motif.
Rugs are desirable for
many reasons. For instance,
you may want to recreate a
certain period or style which
just can't be done authenti-
cally with wall-to-wall. Or
you may like the practi-
cality of being able to turn a
rug to distribute the wear
evenly—the economy of not
having td pay installation
costs.
Of course, if yours is a
family that moves often or if
you're an apartment dwell-
er, rugs are the perfect an-
swer. They make really ex-
citing things happen to your
wood or tile floors and, when
you move, just roll them up
and off you go, rugs and all.
MEASURING
CARPET IS EASY
How do you estimate how
much carpet you need?
Simply measure your' room
carefully iii feet. Then
multiply the length by the
width which gives you the
number of square feet. Then
divide by 9 to find out the
number of square yards you
need. (Most carpet is sold by
the square yard) . Of course,
this doesn't take into ac-
count 'any jogs or odd wall
shapes may have. So
figure tri about 10er cent
t
more when -estimating cost.
One final note. Even if you
have wall-to-wall carpet
throughout your home,
you'restill in the market for
area rugs. How about in
front of the fireplace with an
imitation bearskin? Or
warm, luxurious little shags
beside the beds? Rugs be-
long—just about every-
where.
best to have an extra heavy
firm cushion for a smooth,
taut installation.
Flat, high density felt or
sponge rubber cushions are
excellent under rugs and
carpet that have a tendency
to. stretch or ripple. Ripple
sponge rubber and foam,
cushions • are popular be-
cause of softness and a feel:
ing of luxury.
Backing Attached
Many carpets now come
with rubber or polyurethane
backings attached. They
were intended primarily for
indoor -outdoor and kitchen
and recreation room in-
stallations but new produc-
tion innovations have red
them into many new areas
with new and improved
backings attached. Many
experts, however, still feel
that the separate sponge
cushions sold for use under
living and bedroom carpets
ate Still the best value.
Remember. . . there are
many still inexpensive cush-
ions made from waste mate-
rial that do not do the job
properly. So, when choosing
your carpet or rug, give
more than a passing thought
to what goes on underneath.
