Clifford arena
nears completion
CLIFFORD — Construction of
a community centre which was
the object of controversy here in
March is nearing completion.
It is hoped the building will be
finished by the end of June so the
village can cash in on a 75 -per
cent subsidy for the labor costs.
under the provincial govern-
ment's i ter works program.
(Tpposin to the $71,000 esti-
mated cost of the centre among
the village's 500 residents result-
ed in a hearing before the Ontario
Municipal Board in April. The
()MB approved the centre and
construction began May 1.
The community centre will be
the first for Clifford which has re-
lied on church basements and the
school auditorium for its activi-
ties in the past.
The centre was first proposed
last year but it was not until biter
the proposal was further outlined
that more than half the residents
supported it.
The centre will contain 6;000
square feet of space housing a
kitchen; two. meeting rooms and
an auditorium.
Village Coun. Larry Grummett
says it is hoped the winter works
program will contribute '$15,000
toward the cost. Another .$10,000
from the ministry of agriculture
and foods has been received and
the Clifford Rotary Club has
pledged $1,000.
Clifford's youth group raised
$1,,500 for the centre with a roller
skating marathon and village
firemen hale raised another $500.
Howick Township has also do-
nated $800.1Coun. Grummett says
any shortfall in donations will be
covered with a loan.
