Any white beans whieh had ad- vanced to the primary .leaf stage were subject to heavy frost dam- age, and it is expected that the lowest lying mixed grain fields would suffer yieldwise; and there would probably be some losses on hay. Pull extent of damage will not be known until harvest. Farmers who were complain- ing about lack of rain to speed growth last week can now .realize how lucky they were. Corn plants destroyed by frost cannot now be replaced owing to the short grow- ing season and it is also consider- ed too late in the year to reseed white beans,. The Wingham area is consider- ed less hard hit than those farther south and west where beans and corn are more extensively grown, Don Pullen, associate agricul- tural representative advised. Some protection will be" avail- , able to farmers who had . crops wiped out through the Crop In- surance Commission, but even in this event, only 30 per cent of a total loss would be paid those with such coverage.
