Miss Jessie MaePar lane,, guest speaker at the Ath- letic Awards banquet at F. E. Madill Secondary school last Wednesday night, said the' sportswoman was a phenomenon in the 1920's. A former track and field star in her own right and physical education teacher, Miss MacFar- lane said that the gradual in-. crease of girls in sports led to changes in the style of dress, commenting on the heavy woolen -knit sweaters, stockings and blue serge bloomers of the earlier days. The speaker stressed the im- portance of good sportsmanship and the value of having fun while participating. "Never lose the joy of playing or sports will become worthless " She added that with the wide -spread field of athletics it is possible to channel one's in- terest into useful activities. Miss MacFarlane closed her remarks with a tripute to the school, those who were leaders in the athletic program and the students . who would receive awards. The speaker was introduced by Chris ' Exel, and Joyce Taylor, named best girl athlete, ex- pressed the appreciation of the Rhona Gibson, Mrs. SirinpSon ,gave a reading 'Five Finger' ".
