Director tells of work t
effect cure for arthritis
The strides made in the treat-
ment of arthritis were described
to a joint meeting of the Home
and School Association and Wing -
ham Kinettes Monday night by
Joseph Dolan, regional director,
Canadian Arthritis and Rheu-
matism . Society.
The speaker presented facts
and figures regarding the work of
the society, saying that early
care and treatment were import-
ant and that by 1975 it was hoped
that considerable control of the
disease would result from re-
search and experience gained in.
treating people of all ages.
• Mr. Dolaiil told of the various
specialists at medical schools
now studying arthritis' and its
causes and said that compared to
20 years ago, the outlook for
sufferers was much brighter. He -
described some of the progress
made in treatment.
A film was shown which de-
picted the modern equipment
used in laboratory work, then
showed a series of treatments
given patients. The focal point of
the film was the treatment given
a young athlete who progressed
to the point where arthritis was
practically cured' and the young
man returned to a normal life, in-
cluding participation in sports.
Mr. Dolan explained that a
team of therapists is now avail-
able for visits to the home and if a
case is refer. ed by a doctor, there
is no cost to those receiving this
attention.
The CARS director expressed
appreciation to the Kinettes for
their help in raising funds
through the annual canvass and
said the group had been re
sponsible for over /$2,00 since
adopting CARS as a project.
Mrs. William Hanula intro
duced Mr. Dolan and Mrs. Rod
Wraith expressed the apprecia-
tion of the group following a ques-
tion and answer period.
The meeting started with a pot-
luck supper and was followed by
a brief business meeting of the
Home and School group. Presi-
dent Mrs. Bruce ,MacDonald
announced it was the final meet-
ing of the current season and said
no plans for future meetings had
been made.
Discussing the future of the H &
S Association, Mrs. MacDonald
said that lack of interest of
parents and extremely poor
attendance - at meetings could
mean that perhaps only two or
three meetings would be held in
the new season starting in Sep-
tember.
At Monday's meeting ohly
eight members were present and
at an earlier meeting only five'
attended.
PROVINCIAL HONOR Certificates and pins were awarded Cathy Culbert, Dungannon;
Marian McGee, RR 3, Wingham; Karen Rivett, Dungannon, at Wingham Achievement
Day for the district 4-H clubs Saturday. Miss Hunt made the presentations. - Staff Photo.
men arrived. The latter re-
sponded to the call under the
Huron County Mutual Fire Aid
system .
Situated on the property of Ken
Ankenman, Concession 1, Howick
'township, the workshop had
deposits of . beeswax because of
its earlier use, which caused the
fire to blaze fiercely and threaten
both the house and barn.
Shortly after the arrival of the
Wingham fire truck and water
tanker, firemen from I-larriston
also reported. In view of this
extra reinforcement, the Wing -
ham units returned home after
the water in the tanker had been
used. -
The workshed was totally de-
stroyed but work of the firemen
saved the adjacent buildings.
While the Wingharn units were
on the way to Howick:; an alarm
conerning a 'grass fire -near the
old CPR ' stockyards on North
Street was answered by Wing-
ham's second fire truck.
