Treat crabgrass
in early spring
Spring is the time when crab-
grass should be . treated.
R. H. Brown, biology specialist .
at the Ridgetown College of Agri-
cultural Technology, recom-
mends that pre -emergence herbi-
cides should be applied in the
spring before the crabgrass can
germinate, preferably before
May 1, and definitely not later
than May 15:
Mr. Brown says that Dacthal or
Betasan, applied as a spray or as
a prepared granular mixture
with fertilizer, are some of the
best control agents tested at
Ridgetown and other research
centres. Ontario Department of
Agriculture and Food Publication
529, Weed Control in Lawns, lists
other chemicals that may be
-used, as does . Publication 75,
Guide to Chemical Weed Control.
To ensure proper application of
these herbicides, consumers
should read these publications as
well as the label on the container
of chemical, recommends Mr.
Brown.. Recommendations
generally suggest a range of
rates for . control, depending on
soil type and degree of crabgrass
infestation. The higher rate is
recommended where previous
applications have failed. A thick
competitive lawn will -help reduce
crabgrass infestations.
Householders with relatively
-small lawns should obtain chemi-
cals in the granular form. Larger
lawns are best treated with a
sprayer.
The Canadian Association for
the Mentally Retarded and the
National Institute on Mental Re-
tardation are stimulating re-
search into all aspects of mental
retardation, particularly toward
prevention and more effective
methods of treatment and train-
ing.
