The Observation Post
BY THE OW GUNNER
The General Military Train-
ing summer course is now well
underway. It is true- the num-
ber on.course is most disappoint-
ing, however, we have real
quality in the eleven candidates
who are undergoing the training.
They have no illusions, no
problems with haircuts, clean-
liness, polishing of boots and
that sort of thing. They are
very keen and w i d e awake
young men. The standard
reached by the end of the first
week has been very encourag-
ing. Indications are the eleven
will surely have their trade by
Christmas and likely quality
as Jr. NCO's in the springor
early summer.
Two,of the young candidates
have volunteered for a cook's
course to be run at -Cdn Forces
School of Logistics, Base Borden;
from August 2-29. They are .
Gnr. John Schnurr and Robert
Zippel of 97 Bty Walkerton.
The only fly in the ointment
Is vacancies for this course.
There were only three positions
on the course for Ontario Re-
gion and thdre are over 60 units
in Ontario Region. We are
keeping our fingers crgssed that
we shall get at least one.
This week -end another six
people got away on variobs
courses. Captains John Abbott,
97 Bty 'and Don Birtwistle are
on their way to 'the Major Qual-
ifying course in Petawawa;''Gun-
ners Abbott, 100 Bty Listowel,
McVittie, 99'Oty (hails from
Blyth), and Potts DE and DG
(cousins) of 97 Bty Walkerton
are on the Artillery Technician
course at Petawawa. Good luck
to you all.
Lt. Garry Reed has taken •
the bull by the horns and has
started to get the old 1st World
War French 75 painted. Not
before its .time.
Lt. Col. R. P. Ritter has an-
nounced that he is going on a
well eamed leave from the 19th
of July to the 3rd of August.
major J. " L. B. Melanson 2I/C
of Seaforth will be appointed
Acting CO of the regiment dur-
ing his absence. .
Last Thursday evening an of-
ficers' selection board was held
for ,Mr. Dale Lamont of Exeter.
Lt. Col. P. A. Wilson (CO, 1st
Hussars, London) was the presi-
dent of the board. Major R. R.
Lewis, Staff Officer Logistics
and Administration, HQ's West-.
ern Ontario District was the
ular force advisor. Caps:. D. H.
Birtwistle was 21 Field Regiment
representative. It will be some
time before the results are
known.
Mr. Lat`nont hails originally
from the Maritimes., has 'had
