Five attend
Toc Alpha
conference
When someone mentions a
Toc Alpha Conference the pic-
ture in most teens' minds (if
`they have heard of Toc Alpha
at all) is that of a s t r a i g h t-
laced gathering of "goody-good-
ies", solemnly listening .t o a
lecturer expound on the evils
of the demon alcohol. Any-
one who thinks like that has ob-
viously never attended a con-
ference.
Five of our students attended
the annual Grey -Bruce Toc Al-
pha Conference in Owen Sound
on the week -end of April 11-
13th. They were Heather Hew-
itt, Pat Hamilton, Pat Zurbrigg,
Ray Elliott and Rick Pritchard.
Ask any of them how dull it
was!
Friday night's activities took
the form of an informal gym
party for the 45 or so delegates
to meet each other. Saturday's
activities included films and
seminars (all optional), where
any topic that interested teens
was discussed. The atmosphere
was very informal, and the
frankness (which is a character-
istic of Toc Alpha) that w as
shown towards such topics as
the faults of the education sys
tem, drugs, sex,. alcohol, re=
ligion and teen involvement
was really refreshing. After a
banquet, the group went roller
skating and to a dance.
Sunday morning church serv-
ice was replaced by a.youth
service where,a film about so-
ciety's apathy was shown. The
Conference ended' on a thought
Local talent
in off-Broadway
production
BY MAC ANDERSON
Do you wonder why your son
or daughter doesn't arrive home
until 6 o'clock or later? Fear
not! He or she may be involv-
ed in the off-broadway produc-
tion of the new Canadian musi-
cal-cornedy (as yet nameless)
written by Anne Old field and dir-
ected by Janice Carter, Keith
.Parrott, Nancy Gowing, Anne
Oldfield and Linda Jamieson.
From now till the 1st and 2nd
of May the cast of talented
young Canadians will be re-
hearsing steadily to p e r fe c t
themselves for their upcoming
debut.
Just as important as the peo-
ple you see acting are the ones
who spend long hours before-
hand, preparing for the concert
--the people on sets, makeup,
wardrobe, properties and light-
ing. Without them the perform-
ance just wouldn't come off.
These people all deserve t
great deal of credit and you can
show it by coming io the prem-
iere performance, May 1st and
2nd.
provoking note as the f i 1 m
"Phoebe" was shown. If you
haven't seen it; ask someone
who has.. It was quite different.
in its approach to teen relations
with other teens and parents.
-Does that sound straight-
laced? Dull? I don't think so.
Interested? I hope so. W h y
don't you join us next confer-
ence? You won't regret it and
that's a promise.

Activities
BY JOHN DENEAU
The gymastics clubs, boys
and girls, are staging a display
of 'heir talints on May 1 and 2,
for the cicert.
The clubs are newly formed
this year. The boys are coach,
ed' by Mr. Dennis, the junior
girls by Miss Huston and senior
girls by Mrs. Underwood.
Unfortunately, because of
exams, basketball and holidays,
the teams were not prepared to
go to the first annual meet.
However, we plan a fine show
for the concert, as well as a
team'to represent us next year.
It is most important for those
who do belong to the club to
attend every practice from now
until showtime.
Two great bands
coming .next month
We've heard manyfavour-
able reports about the dance
held at the schoollast Friday
night. We can credit the Stu-
dents' Council for securing for
the evening, the "Mythical
Meadow", a really great band
from Ottawa. Since the band
cost $500, and there were only
about 500 people in attendance,
the Council was just ableito
break even.
It's too bad that they're not
getting a little more support,
especially when they're bring-
ing us bands of this calibre.
Let's do something about it, eh?
With the formal coming up on
May 9, at which the "Chosen
Few" from Toronto will play,
and another dance the follow-
ing'week, May 16 with the
"Bedtime Story", also from To-,
ronto, maybe we can get out
there full strength and show the
Council we're with them all
the way!
P. S. We're proud to say
that it has been reported that
there was no trouble or damage
caused at the dance Friday
night. Good going!
